Role Overview

This position is a full-time, on-site Early Intervention Therapist role based in Canterbury, New Zealand. The therapist is tasked with planning and delivering customized individual and group intervention sessions focused on behavioral, social, and early academic skills development for neurodiverse children. Key duties involve assessing developmental needs, establishing clear, measurable goals, and utilizing playful, motivating, and culturally sensitive intervention strategies. Daily activities include progress documentation, session material preparation, ongoing communication with caregivers, and coordination with teachers and healthcare professionals to maintain consistent care.

Responsibilities

• Plan and conduct individualized and small-group interventions tailored to neurodiverse children’s developmental needs.
• Evaluate children’s progress and set achievable, measurable objectives.
• Record detailed notes on intervention strategies and child development outcomes.
• Prepare and organize materials needed for therapy sessions.
• Maintain open, respectful communication lines with families to support child development.
• Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams including educators and healthcare professionals to provide integrated support.
• Participate actively in team meetings and contribute to ongoing program enhancement.
• Ensure the therapy environment is safe, welcoming, and inclusive, consistent with organizational values.

Qualifications and Requirements

• Experience in early intervention, child development, special education, psychology, or related fields, particularly with neurodiverse children.
• Proficient in behavioral support techniques, social skills coaching, and structured, play-oriented learning methods.
• Strong interpersonal skills to establish trusting relationships with children, families, and co-workers.
• Competent in detailed observation, documentation, and maintaining accurate progress records.
• Effective at collaborating within multidisciplinary teams while managing workload and priorities.
• Preferred tertiary qualification in education, psychology, speech-language therapy, occupational therapy, or similar disciplines.
• Understanding of neurodiversity-affirming approaches and commitment to inclusive, non-discriminatory practices.
• Authorized to work in New Zealand and compliance with necessary registrations, certifications, and clearances required for child-related work.
