Job Overview
The Director of Equipment Application & Fleet Solutions acts as the in-house authority on material handling equipment specifications and application analyses. This role requires extensive travel across North America to observe customer operations directly, assisting account teams in recommending suitable fleet solutions. Reporting to the EVP of Fleet Management, this position demands over 60% travel and serves as the central knowledge hub for brand-independent fleet strategy across multi-site clients.
Key Responsibilities
- Perform on-site evaluations of customer facilities, including equipment, layout, traffic flow, load profiles, and shift patterns.
- Collect facility data through observation, measurements, imagery, telematics, and operational records to inform equipment recommendations.
- Clearly communicate analysis outcomes and recommendations to warehouse managers, operations personnel, and executives.
- Select appropriate equipment types such as forklifts, reach trucks, pallet jacks, order pickers, and AGVs based on application needs.
- Maintain comprehensive knowledge of major OEMs and material handling equipment categories I through VII.
- Develop and curate a standardized specification library and decision-support tools to accelerate solution formulation.
- Participate in strategic account visits and business reviews, lending technical expertise to support consultative sales efforts.
- Act as the primary equipment expert for account management, offering remote and in-person solution support.
- Train account teams in equipment fundamentals, applications, and aligning solutions with customer requirements.
- Collaborate with Supplier Management on vendor programs, pricing strategies, OEM pricing comparisons, and market trends.
- Coordinate with Operations and Service teams to verify real-world equipment performance against specifications.
- Provide leadership with insights on equipment trends, OEM efficacy, automation, telematics, alternative power sources, and emerging technologies.
- Execute additional assigned duties as necessary.
Candidate Requirements
- Minimum 7 years’ experience with material handling equipment in dealership, OEM, or significant fleet environments.
- Bachelor’s degree in Engineering, Supply Chain, or a related discipline, or equivalent professional experience.
- Demonstrated success in application engineering, fleet consulting, or equipment sales with a strong field presence.
- Expertise in material handling equipment classes I-VII and warehouse operational principles.
- Proficiency interpreting facility drawings, rack layouts, and operational metrics such as throughput and telematics data.
- Strong analytical capabilities with familiarity in Excel, fleet management software, and customer data interpretation.
- Excellent communication skills to translate technical subjects into clear business discussions.
- Capability and willingness to travel extensively (60%+), including overnight trips.
- Valid driver’s license and unrestricted ability to travel by air domestically.
- Knowledge of AGV/AMR systems, lithium-ion battery technologies, warehouse management systems, and evolving fleet technologies.
- Experience or knowledge in Six Sigma, Lean methodologies, industrial engineering, equipment leasing, or financing.
Physical and Work Environment
This role involves prolonged periods of standing, walking in customer facilities, manual handling of up to 70 pounds, and frequent reaching or climbing stairs. Visual acuity for close work is essential. Work settings include home office, warehouses, distribution centers, manufacturing facilities, and travel environments with varying noise levels. Personal protective equipment may be necessary at some sites.
