Role Overview
The Connectivity Infrastructure Operations Engineer will oversee the day-to-day operation, maintenance, and improvement of backbone infrastructure, including fiber optics, power systems, transmission, and estate assets. This role ensures the network’s high availability, quick resolution of faults, and efficient delivery of services supporting connectivity, colocation, cloud, AI computing, cybersecurity, and payment platforms.
Key Responsibilities
- Operate and maintain fiber optic cables, power infrastructure, and transmission systems within the backbone network.
- Manage coordination with fiber and power contractors, verifying and validating their deliverables through official acceptance documentation.
- Implement infrastructure projects timely and cost-effectively.
- Handle incident management activities including fault detection, diagnosis, and rapid restoration efforts.
- Perform scheduled preventive maintenance on fiber, power, and transmission components.
- Deploy and maintain transmission network infrastructure to ensure optimal performance.
- Keep accurate and updated records/documentation of estate acquisitions.
- Conduct fiber route surveys within agreed Service Level Agreements across Kampala and other regions.
- Prepare and deliver operational, project-related, and ad hoc reports as needed.
Qualifications and Experience
- Diploma or Degree in Telecommunications, Electrical Engineering, or a related field.
- Between 2 to 4 years of practical experience in telecom infrastructure or field operations.
- Hands-on expertise working with fiber optics, power systems, and transmission networks.
- Possession of certifications such as CFOA, CFOS/T, CFOS/D, CFOS/S or equivalent is advantageous; proficiency in interpreting fiber certification standards is essential.
- Experience supervising contractors and coordinating field operations effectively.
Knowledge and Skills
- Proficient troubleshooting and fault resolution abilities.
- Sound practical knowledge of fiber optics, power systems, and transmission networks.
- Effective coordination of field teams and external contractors.
- Strong discipline in time management and task execution.
- Excellent skills in reporting, documentation, and communication.
