Biosecurity Field Operator

About the Role

Join Downer's Biosecurity Team as a Field Operator in Cromwell, Otago, working outdoors across the South Island to help preserve New Zealand's natural environment through pest management programs. This fixed-term role runs until June 2027, with possibility for extension. Training will be provided to the right candidate as you apply pest control methods including trapping, baiting, surveying, and monitoring animal pests like possums, rabbits, and ferrets, as well as managing invasive plants such as gorse, broom, and wilding pines. Accommodation is supplied for field locations away from the depot.

Key Responsibilities

• Implement pest control strategies including placing traps and baits, conducting surveys and monitoring pest populations.
• Manage targeted pest plants through field work using approved methods.
• Maintain accurate records using GPS and handheld devices while operating safely in rural environments.
• Travel extensively throughout the South Island to various field sites.
• Adhere strictly to health and safety protocols to ensure personal and team safety during extended periods in the field.

Candidate Requirements

• Self-driven, energetic, physically fit individual capable of working independently and collaboratively.
• Familiarity with animal behavior, preferably from leisure or rural work experience.
• Possession of a valid Class 1 driver’s license; experience with 4WD and light utility vehicles is highly advantageous.
• Strong focus on health and safety practices.
• Willingness to spend extended time away from home with accommodation provided.
• Preferred additional qualifications include First Aid certification, Controlled Substance or Approved Handler certificates, Growsafe Certification, and relevant NZQA unit standards for vehicle or equipment operation.
