Job description

About the Role

Cuningham is dedicated to creating healthcare environments that influence how individuals heal, work, and connect, blending imaginative design with technical accuracy and a strong commitment to patient and caregiver needs. We are currently looking for an Architectural Designer to join our San Diego office, contributing to healthcare projects throughout all design and delivery stages. Candidates with a curiosity-driven approach and craftsmanship are encouraged to apply. Prior healthcare design experience is advantageous, but sincere interest in the healthcare sector is also welcomed.

Depending on qualifications and expertise, candidates may be considered for either Architectural Designer I or II. Architectural Designer I (non-exempt) supports the development of design solutions, documentation, and technical coordination under the guidance of project leaders. Architectural Designer II (exempt) autonomously progresses small to medium project components with minimal guidance, collaborating directly with project leaders, consultants, and clients.

Key Responsibilities

  • Create and coordinate design solutions across all project phases through an iterative and collaborative process incorporating sketching, 2D/3D modeling, and computational design, ensuring alignment with project success criteria.
  • Investigate and promote regenerative design strategies that enhance the built, social, and natural environments.
  • Prepare design presentations and contribute to project documentation with creative and technical detailing.
  • Collaborate on BIM model coordination with consultants and oversee the review of consultant and vendor drawings.
  • Assist in construction administration tasks alongside Project Architect and on-site personnel, including site visits and verifications.
  • Conduct research on exterior materials, wall assemblies, waterproofing solutions, and vertical circulation systems.
  • Utilize software tools such as MS Office, Adobe Creative Suite, and Revit/BIM 360; gain familiarity with Rhino, Enscape, and Lumion.

Candidate Requirements

  • A professional degree in Architecture and at least 2 years of professional architectural design experience.
  • Experience working in healthcare design or a strong desire to develop a career within healthcare architecture.
  • Knowledge of building codes, construction documentation, and BIM workflow processes.
  • A collaborative, inquisitive attitude with meticulous attention to craftsmanship and understanding of design impact on people and the environment.
  • For Architectural Designer II applicants: proven ability to independently manage portions of project scope with minimal supervision, including direct collaboration with project leaders, consultants, and clients.

Compensation and Benefits

The annual salary range is $60,000 to $95,000, reflecting both Architectural Designer I and II levels. Placement within this range depends on experience, qualifications, and geographic location. Compensation details may be further discussed during the hiring process.

Employee benefits include health, dental, and vision insurance; wellness programs; life and disability insurance; 401(k) retirement plan; paid holidays; and paid time off.
