Yard Controller

Role Overview

Romac Logistics is seeking a structured, assured, and safety-conscious Yard Controller to join their newly established Chesterfield facility. Operating from the gatehouse, this position entails managing the entry and exit of vehicles, trailers, drivers, and visitors to the site. Collaboration with Transport and Warehouse departments is essential to allocate correct bays, accurately log trailer movements, and verify all necessary documentation is in order.

Handling chilled food products demands vigilance in inspecting refrigerated trailers to support cold chain integrity.

Key Duties

• Registrations and details of drivers, vehicles, and trailers are checked upon arrival and departure.
• Log vehicle registrations, trailer identities, driver information, load references, and timestamps of arrivals and departures.
• Coordinate with Transport and Warehouse personnel to guide vehicles and trailers appropriately.
• Direct drivers to designated loading/unloading bays, parking spots, or waiting areas.
• Maintain a precise log of all trailers’ locations throughout the site.
• Verify correct pairing of tractor units with trailers during movements.
• Ensure vehicle and trailer data align with paperwork and transport schedules.
• Inspect trailers for external damage, cleanliness, and suitability.
• Confirm refrigerated trailers are powered on, operating, and set to required temperatures.
• Measure and document trailer temperatures as necessary.
• Report refrigeration alarms, temperature discrepancies, defects, or trailer damage promptly.
• Check all associated load paperwork, Proof of Delivery, trailer seals, and customer-specific documentation.
• Prevent unauthorized departures of vehicles or trailers by verifying paperwork and approvals.
• Monitor vehicle wait times and raise concerns about any operational hold-ups.
• Enforce adherence to site safety protocols including security, parking, speed limits, and personal protective equipment.
• Keep thorough gatehouse records and provide detailed shift handover summaries.

Candidate Profile

• Experience in transport, warehouse, gatehouse, yard, or distribution operations preferred.
• Strong organizational skills paired with effective communication capabilities.
• Exceptional attention to detail to ensure accuracy and compliance.
• Confident interaction with drivers and operational teams.
• Ability to remain composed in a dynamic and fast-paced environment.
• Basic proficiency with computers, email, and Microsoft Office applications.
• Capability to meticulously verify vehicle, trailer, and documentation details.
• Dedicated to professional and safety-first work ethics.
• Self-motivated with a readiness to independently manage operational challenges.

Experience in chilled food logistics, refrigerated transport, or temperature-controlled distribution is advantageous but not mandatory, as relevant training will be provided to successful candidates.

Work Schedule and Compensation

• Permanent full-time employment.
• Shift pattern includes four days working followed by four days off, with shifts from 06:00 to 18:00 or 18:00 to 06:00.
• Hourly pay ranging between £12.80 and £13.40.
• Location: Chesterfield, England, United Kingdom.
