Job description
About the Role
This position offers a 24-month full-time traineeship with Townsville City Council within the Planning, Environment & Lifestyle division, specifically in Community & Lifestyle. The role includes a 9-day fortnight (38 hours per week) work schedule and involves rotating among three library locations: Aitkenvale, Riverway, and Flinders Street libraries in Townsville, Queensland.
The successful candidate will undertake a Certificate III in Library and Information Services through a registered training organisation (TAFE Queensland), combining formal learning with hands-on work experience. This traineeship will build practical, sought-after skills in delivering exemplary library services to a diverse community.
Responsibilities
Under supervision, you will support daily library operations by engaging with customers, addressing their queries—including those related to technology and digital tools—and actively promoting the full range of library offerings. You will assist visitors in confidently using self-service facilities, help maintain an inviting library environment, and contribute to the delivery and preparation of engaging library programs and resources.
Requirements
Candidates should have completed at least Year 10 with passes in English and Mathematics, possess sound communication and computer skills, and hold or be able to obtain a Queensland C class provisional driver's licence. A commitment to safety, teamwork, and personal accountability is essential. You will be required to complete all formal training and assessments associated with the Certificate III qualification and keep detailed records of your progress.
Additional Information
Starting in February 2027, this role provides a salary range of AUD 38,559 to 52,581 annually plus superannuation, which varies based on educational level, years out of school, and age at commencement. Townsville City Council offers numerous benefits, including five weeks of annual leave with loading, various leave entitlements such as parental and domestic violence leave, uniforms and PPE where applicable, salary progression, superannuation contributions up to 13.5% for contributing employees, salary sacrifice options, learning and development opportunities, health and fitness discounts, an employee loyalty program, and an employee assistance program.
Applicants should be aware of the Council's zero-tolerance policy towards drugs and alcohol. The recruitment process may include aptitude testing, group assessments, and interviews. The Council encourages applications from diverse backgrounds and will provide accessibility adjustments as needed. For position inquiries, candidates may contact the designated person via email.
