Role Overview
We are looking for a highly experienced Staff Brand Designer to play a key role in defining and preserving Mercury's visual identity across all platforms and interactions. This leadership position involves maintaining high design standards, spearheading complex projects from start to finish, and working closely with multidisciplinary teams including brand strategists, writers, product managers, and executives. You will help advance our visual language, effectively communicate our mission, and mentor junior creatives while driving major branding initiatives.
Key Responsibilities
- Establish and enforce top-tier design quality standards for Mercury's brand presence across campaigns, websites, social media, and events.
- Manage challenging high-profile design projects from brief to execution, guaranteeing consistency and excellence.
- Collaborate with senior designers and leadership to refine visual standards such as typography, imagery, layouts, and motion design.
- Review team deliverables to maintain craftsmanship, elevate quality, and support decision-making.
- Commission and art direct external creatives including photographers, illustrators, and motion designers to enrich brand expression.
- Create comprehensive brand system documentation and frameworks to ensure alignment and clarity across teams.
- Guide and develop junior designers through feedback, critiques, and collaborative pairing to raise overall team quality.
- Work alongside brand strategists, content creators, product marketers, and company leadership to unify brand efforts.
- Keep abreast of industry trends to continually enhance Mercury’s visual identity and design standards.
Required Qualifications
- 7 to 10+ years’ professional experience in brand design with a portfolio showcasing expert skills in typography, layout, color theory, and composition.
- Expertise in Figma and experience managing or contributing significantly to a design system.
- Deep understanding of brand systems, ensuring scalability and consistency during growth phases or transitions.
- Background in high-caliber creative environments such as agencies, fashion, premium consumer brands, or progressive tech companies.
- Capable of independent staff-level work, influencing teams and making strategic design decisions.
- Strong verbal and presentational communication skills to effectively explain design choices and process impacts.
- A well-defined aesthetic judgment and ability to critically assess and elevate creative output.
- Experience commissioning and overseeing external creatives like photographers, illustrators, and motion designers.
- Proven collaborative experience with cross-functional teams including strategists, writers, and product teams.
- Curiosity, disciplined restraint, and dedication to delivering work with enduring value.
