Position Overview

The Spare role provides crucial operational and administrative support throughout railway terminals, with a primary assignment in Englehart. This position facilitates continuity by aiding crew scheduling, customer communications, and yard inventory management, while ensuring meticulous record-keeping and promoting safety compliance.

Primary Responsibilities

  • Accurately update and maintain railcar event information in the RMI system, covering interchanges, placements, releases, pulls, delays, holds, rejects, bad orders, and train arrivals/departures through liaison with internal teams, clients, and connecting railroads.
  • Provide local operating train crews with necessary switching instructions and mechanical repair information related to bad order cars.
  • Coordinate yard inventory status with operating crews and perform periodic yard audits to support continuous process improvement.
  • Contribute to developing standardized processes and communication protocols specific to Englehart and other terminal operations.
  • Offer backup coverage for Crew Management Centre, Customer Service Unit, and Terminal Support roles across Englehart and other terminals as required.
  • Manage train crew scheduling by calling employees for various assignments including freight, passenger, yard, recrews, rescues, and away-from-home duties according to USW-Agreement #8.
  • Document crew employee mileage and monitor compliance with work/rest hour regulations.
  • Advertise, award, and track temporary and permanent train crew job vacancies.
  • Maintain both manual and electronic records related to crew calling and staffing.
  • Communicate information to train crew employees through phone, fax, and electronic platforms.
  • Handle administrative and janitorial duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications

  • Secondary School Diploma (OSSD) or equivalent GED.
  • 1 to 2 years of clerical or administrative experience.
  • Proficiency in computer usage with strong typing skills.
  • Dangerous Goods certification is advantageous.
  • Previous railway industry experience is beneficial.
  • Willingness to work shifts including evenings and weekends.
  • Experience in cleaning/janitorial work is considered a plus.
