Role Overview

The Software Development Engineer - 3 (Backend) will lead designing and building scalable, reliable backend systems that underpin Quince’s products. This key position involves solving complex challenges, guiding architectural decisions, mentoring engineers, and contributing to a culture of engineering excellence to support rapid, scalable growth aligned with the company’s mission.

Key Responsibilities

• Lead the architecture and development of scalable and resilient backend services.
• Make critical system design and architectural choices for high-scale distributed systems.
• Tackle complex issues related to system performance, scalability, and reliability.
• Define both immediate and long-term backend technology strategies.
• Set and uphold high standards for code and system quality along with engineering practices.
• Perform design and code reviews across teams to ensure best practices.
• Mentor engineers to cultivate a robust engineering culture.
• Collaborate with product, data, and infrastructure teams for effective solution delivery.
• Proactively enhance system performance, architecture, and developer productivity.
• Lead initiatives on observability, reliability, and operational excellence.
• Play a major role in recruiting and team development to elevate engineering standards.

Qualifications

• Strong foundation in data structures, algorithms, and system design.
• Over 5 years of backend development experience using Java and Spring/Spring Boot.
• Expertise in scalable distributed systems handling high traffic.
• Proficiency with SQL and NoSQL databases and data modeling at scale.
• Experience building fault-tolerant, highly available systems.
• Capability to lead architecture decisions and influence technical directions.
• Excellent debugging and problem-solving skills for large-scale systems.
• Adaptability to fast-paced, ambiguous environments with strong ownership.
• Effective communication and stakeholder management abilities.
• Proven track record mentoring engineers and leading technical projects.

Preferred Skills

• Experience with AWS or other cloud platforms and cloud-native designs.
• Deep understanding of microservices and distributed system patterns.
• Familiarity with CI/CD pipelines, DevOps, and infrastructure automation.
• Knowledge of containerization technologies such as Docker and Kubernetes.
• Experience with large-scale system migrations or architecture changes.
• Background in high-growth startups or internet consumer companies.
