About the Role
Grain St Laurent, a reputable agricultural commodities trading firm based in Montreal since 2009, is seeking a Senior Grain Trader to manage and expand an existing book of business while setting a leadership example within the team. The firm specializes in buying, selling, and coordinating transportation of grains and cereals across North America and international markets, with a strong commitment to quality service, entrepreneurial spirit, and sustainable food systems.
Key Responsibilities
- Take full ownership and grow your trading portfolio by originating, negotiating, and closing grain purchase and sale contracts across North America and export markets to boost volume, margins, and long-term profits.
- Analyze market fundamentals such as supply and demand, basis and freight trends, and macroeconomic factors to identify opportunities ahead of competitors.
- Monitor and manage trading risk by keeping track of positions, exposure, counterparty and credit risks to safeguard margins and apply disciplined trading practices.
- Collaborate closely with Logistics and Operations teams to ensure efficient movement of products via rail, truck, and shipping vessels for seamless trade execution.
- Develop and strengthen critical relationships with producers, buyers, and freight partners; also represent the company at industry conferences and trade shows.
- Mentor junior traders by sharing market insights and best practices to elevate overall team performance.
- Contribute to trading desk strategy, improving workflows, and play a vital role in the desk's growth over time.
Candidate Profile
- Minimum 3 years of experience in grain or agricultural commodity trading, with proven success managing a profitable book; experience in both buying and selling preferred. Transition candidates from origination or merchandising backgrounds will also be considered.
- Strong skills in origination and negotiation, comfortable with cold calling and relationship development.
- Sound commercial judgment involving market data interpretation, basis and freight economics, and disciplined risk management.
- Natural leadership qualities and passion for mentoring others.
- Rigorous attention to detail and a strong sense of ownership.
- Fluent in English (written and spoken) essential; proficiency in French or other languages is an advantage.
- Educational background or equivalent experience in agriculture, business, economics, logistics, or related fields is preferred.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Excel and commodity trading systems.
