The Principal Database Administrator position at Miles IT demands a strategic leader who will define and guide the future of our data infrastructure by harmonizing the stability of on-premise systems with the scalability benefits offered by Azure cloud technologies. This role transcends routine maintenance, focusing on pioneering architectural decisions while championing a robust multi-tenant SaaS database strategy. The ideal candidate will be both a technical guardian and an inspiring mentor to our skilled team of DBAs and developers.
Key Responsibilities
- Establish and lead the long-term database vision aligning with business and product expansion strategies.
- Architect scalable, secure, and cost-effective SaaS database solutions for multi-tenant environments.
- Oversee and optimize Azure SQL Managed Instances alongside traditional on-premises SQL Server databases to ensure robust performance.
- Design, implement, and maintain comprehensive high availability and disaster recovery protocols to meet strict uptime commitments.
- Orchestrate cloud migration projects transferring workloads securely and efficiently from on-premises to Azure platforms.
- Drive continuous improvement in database performance by employing advanced query tuning, indexing, and concurrency management techniques.
- Formulate and enforce operational standards and best practices for database deployment and management.
- Lead mentorship programs and manage the professional development of a team of DBAs and developers, ensuring the excellence of technical deliverables.
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, or a related quantitative discipline.
- Minimum of 8 years' experience in database administration including extensive work on high-availability SQL Server installations both on-premises and in Azure environments.
- At least 3 years of leadership experience managing teams of DBAs and developers with a strong emphasis on coaching and mentoring.
- Advanced skills in Microsoft SQL Server and Azure SQL Managed Instance with a focus on modernization and cloud migration.
- Proficiency designing and overseeing multi-tenant SaaS database structures that support scalability, security, and sustained performance.
- Expert knowledge of performance tuning strategies, including query optimization, execution plan evaluation, and index management.
- Comprehensive experience implementing and managing high availability and disaster recovery plans to maximize system uptime.
- Demonstrated responsibility for system dependability and scalability, combined with strong project management and prioritization capabilities.
- Excellent communication skills facilitating collaboration across technical teams and translation of complex topics to non-technical stakeholders.
