Job description

Role Overview

This position involves the physical loading, unloading, and manual sorting of packages in a safe and efficient manner. Package Handlers may rotate through various areas and positions including loader, unloader, palletizer, scanner, weigher, keyer (SWAK), quality assurance (QA), facer, switcher, and more.

Specialized Duties

  • Package Handler Trainer: Provides training to other handlers on loading, unloading, palletizing, and scanning methods to ensure efficient and safe package movement throughout the operation.
  • Air Package Handler: Oversees a multi-step inspection process to guarantee “Air Restricted” packages are not loaded onto air containers.

Core Responsibilities

  • Use appropriate manual handling techniques for all package manipulation.
  • Load and unload packages onto/from delivery vehicles, trailers, pallets, conveyor carts, and loading grids.
  • Lift, move, push, and pull packages continuously and repetitively for approximately 3 to 5 hours, possibly across one or multiple shifts daily.
  • Identify conveyor systems by scanning packages, reading labels and charts, verifying numbers, and memorizing information to accurately sort packages.
  • Perform other assigned tasks as directed.

Additional Trainer Responsibilities

  • Train new handlers on effective unloading, loading, palletizing, transportation, small item handling, SWAK, and handling of non-transportable packages.
  • Provide additional instruction to peers requiring further training on handling techniques as determined by management.
  • Offer feedback on proper package handling methods when necessary.
  • Reinforce dock safety standards among peers.
  • Demonstrate all relevant procedures through example.
  • Report sorting conditions to managers to aid operational efficiency decisions.
  • Support implementation of new package handling procedures and techniques.
  • Continuously handle packages while training others.

Additional Air Package Handler Duties

  • Scan every package in the air transport consolidation area and inspect for hazardous materials or ORM-D designations.
  • Load packages into unit load devices as applicable.
  • Complete return notifications for air-restricted packages in the SCMS system.
  • Regularly load, unload, lift, transport, push, and pull packages.

Qualifications

  • No minimum education required.
  • No prior experience required; however, specialized roles such as Trainer and Air Package Handler prefer six months of prior experience with FedEx Express Corporation.
  • Capability to understand and follow safety and work instructions.
  • Ability to interpret numbers and information to accurately sort packages.
  • Familiarity with basic tools and equipment like roller conveyors, dock carts, handheld scanners, chutes, and unloading devices.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills; able to thrive in a fast-paced team environment.
  • Handlers operating switching equipment must hold a valid driver’s license and maintain a Department of Transportation (DOT) driving record.
  • Trainer role requires ability to instruct multiple peers simultaneously.
  • Air Package Handler must complete and maintain required Airlift Consolidation Gateway and government-mandated indirect air carrier training, including annual recertifications.

Working Conditions

  • Work may be performed in both hot and cold temperature environments.
  • Workplace can be very noisy.
  • Requires ability to lift and carry items ranging from 5 to 50 pounds regularly.
  • No travel is required.
  • Typical shifts begin at 6:00 am and last approximately 3 to 4 hours, with availability needed Monday through Saturday.
  • Hourly wage is $20.00.
