Overview

Infantry Soldiers serve as the primary combat personnel within the Army, tasked with closing in on and neutralizing enemy forces. They are integral to the Combat Arms team, alongside Artillery and Armour units. These soldiers can be deployed worldwide, in diverse environments such as Arctic tundra, mountains, jungles, deserts, and undertake various operational modes like airmobile and amphibious missions.

Duties and Responsibilities

• Efficiently operate and care for an array of weaponry including rifles, hand-grenades, machine guns of varying calibers, and anti-tank systems.
• Utilize advanced technology for field communications, navigation, and night-vision surveillance.
• Regularly inspect and maintain weapons, vehicles, survival gear, and individual defensive equipment.
• Take part in airborne missions and coordinate operations with air support and artillery elements.
• Engage in unarmed combat and implement tactics such as camouflage, concealment, patrolling, assault, defense, and evasion.

Work Environment

Infantry Soldiers typically operate outdoors and train in conditions mirroring field environments. Assignments are primarily to battalions within Canada, but deployment opportunities exist globally. Regular Force members can expect relocations during their careers. Reserve Force members train and serve part-time locally without mandatory relocations, committing to weekly and weekend duties with possibilities for full-time engagements and deployments.

Entry and Eligibility

• No prior work experience or career-specific skills are required.
• Applicants must have completed provincial requirements for Grade 10 or Secondary 4 in Quebec; foreign education credentials may be recognized.

Training

Initial training begins with Basic Military Qualification at the Canadian Forces Leadership and Recruit School in Quebec, focusing on physical fitness and foundational military skills.

Infantry training occurs at one of three Military Training Centres across Canada, lasting 17 weeks and covering weapon handling, field-craft, tactical movements, defensive constructions, navigation, and patrolling.

Advanced specialized courses are available in areas like parachuting, mountain warfare, instructional techniques, first aid, urban operations, close quarter combat, and more. Career progression can include leadership and specialized operational roles.

Part-Time Service Option

The role is also accessible through the Primary Reserve Force, where members serve part-time at local units with scheduled training sessions. Reserve members receive pay during training, benefits, and pension contributions, without obligatory relocations, and may volunteer for deployments.
