Job description
Overview
As a Gunner in the Canadian Armed Forces, you hold the critical responsibility of surveillance, target acquisition, and utilizing indirect fire to engage adversaries effectively. Your role encompasses the operation, upkeep, and deployment of various artillery and support systems, ranging from howitzers and mortars to radars, acoustic detectors, uncrewed aerial systems, and armored vehicles. Coordination with other combat arms such as Armoured, Infantry, Combat Engineers, and multiple support divisions is essential to mission success.
Core Duties
- Manage and maintain artillery equipment including 105mm and 155mm howitzers.
- Operate and service advanced Ground Based Air Defence systems.
- Handle surveillance and target acquisition technologies like radar, acoustic arrays, and UAVs.
- Control a range of transportation and combat vehicles such as light trucks, Tactical Armoured Patrol Vehicles, and Light Armoured Vehicles (LAV 6.0).
- Utilize sophisticated command post computers, laser range-finders, and fire control systems efficiently.
Working Environment
Gunners are deployed in diverse settings including Arctic tundra, jungles, deserts, mountainous terrains, and urban environments. They participate in overseas missions and aid national efforts during emergencies. Initial postings occur in any one of five major artillery regiments across Canada including locations in Manitoba, Ontario, New Brunswick, and Quebec.
Career Path and Relocation
Regular Force members after completing training are assigned to a base with potential relocations throughout their career. Primary Reserve members typically stay with a home unit, serving part-time primarily on evenings and weekends with some full-time opportunities.
Entry Requirements and Training
The minimum education requirement is completion of Grade 10 or equivalent. No prior experience is necessary as candidates undergo a 9-week Basic Military Qualification in Quebec focused on foundational military skills and physical fitness, followed by specialized 9-week artillery training in New Brunswick. Further specialization in specific artillery streams is then pursued in assigned regiments.
Part-Time Opportunities
Primary Reserve Force roles offer part-time military involvement allowing continuation of civilian careers or education. Reservists receive comparable training, are compensated during training sessions, and have eligibility for benefits and pension contributions.
