Environmental Advisor

About the Role

Join Perseus Mining Limited as an Environmental Advisor based in Sengerema, Mwanza Region, Tanzania. This role focuses on overseeing and coordinating environmental monitoring and compliance for mining operations, ensuring continuous improvement and adherence to regulatory standards.

Primary Responsibilities

• Plan, organize, and coordinate environmental monitoring activities such as water quality assessments, biodiversity surveys, noise and vibration monitoring efficiently and cost-effectively, ensuring resource availability.
• Support the development, upkeep, and continual improvement of the Environmental Management System (EMS) adhering to company and regulatory standards.
• Oversee environmental compliance via consistent application and review of the Environmental Obligations Register.
• Create and maintain Standard Operating Procedures and program-specific manuals for all monitoring initiatives.
• Design, implement, and track onsite rehabilitation plans aimed at maximizing land restoration throughout the life of the mine.
• Coordinate baseline environmental surveys and ongoing monitoring programs to evaluate environmental conditions.
• Control and eliminate invasive species including feral animals, vermin, and weeds.
• Manage permits and maintain detailed registers for land clearing, disturbed areas, topsoil collection, and storage.
• Keep an updated fauna register documenting animal sightings, roadkills, and measures for feral animal control.
• Provide technical advice and support to employees and contractors to ensure environmentally sound operational practices.
• Promote environmental awareness and professional development among staff by delivering training and guidance on environmental topics.
• Coordinate and liaise with environmental consultants working onsite.
• Contribute to the preparation of the environmental department's annual budget.
• Implement and maintain waste management systems including hazardous waste handling, recycling, waste reduction strategies, and both onsite and offsite waste disposal.
• Train site personnel on proper waste segregation and disposal aligned with waste management programs.
• Identify all waste streams and supervise daily waste collection, ensuring segregation and correct bin usage.
• Conduct regular environmental inspections across all mining areas.
• Maintain environmental legal registers, including all necessary permits, licenses, and registrations.

Qualifications and Experience

• A minimum of a bachelor’s degree in Environmental Science, Environmental Engineering, or a related field.
• At least six years of pertinent experience in environmental management, preferably within the mining sector.
• Familiarity with ISO 14001 Environmental Management System implementation processes.
• Proficient in environmental management software or similar platforms, as well as MS Office and Acquire Database software.
• Strong communication and interpersonal skills suitable for interaction with multiple stakeholders.
• Demonstrated understanding of Tanzanian and international environmental regulatory frameworks.
• Basic knowledge of Health, Safety, and Environment (HSE) regulations.
• Experience with auditing and EMS management systems.
