Economist (Data Analytics)

Overview

The Economist Service serves as the leading body for economists within Singapore's public sector. Its mission is to build a core team of proficient economists dedicated to enhancing economic analysis, thereby supporting better public policymaking. Economists in this service contribute their expertise by conducting research and analysis across various government Ministries and agencies including Trade and Industry, Finance, Manpower, Social and Family Development, Health, and Sustainability and the Environment. Their work informs a broad spectrum of policy areas encompassing economic, fiscal, socio-economic, health, security, and infrastructure matters.

Role Responsibilities

As an economist specializing in data analytics, you will collaborate with a team employing econometrics, data science, and artificial intelligence methodologies applied to innovative and large-scale datasets to address pressing policy questions. Your projects will target themes such as trade and internationalization, labor markets, and digital transformation, aiming to generate data-driven insights that enhance policy outcomes and formulation.

You will also contribute to improving economic monitoring capabilities within the Ministry of Trade and Industry by utilizing real-time and high-frequency datasets along with predictive modeling techniques. Another key responsibility will be leveraging text analytics to detect emerging trends from multiple media channels, aiding the Economics Division’s research priorities.

Effective communication of your analytical findings is essential, requiring you to present insights clearly and visually through tools like dashboards to engage diverse stakeholders successfully.

Qualifications and Skills

• Degree, Master's, or PhD in Economics or related quantitative fields such as Statistics, Applied Mathematics, Computer Science, Data Analytics, Engineering, or equivalent disciplines.
• Strong dedication to empirical research with proven experience in tackling complex challenges through quantitative methods.
• Advanced quantitative expertise including econometrics and data science applied to forecasting, policy modeling, simulation, and impact evaluations.
• Experience handling large-scale, real-time data collections.
• Excellent verbal and written communication skills capable of simplifying and clearly conveying complex concepts.
• Proficient in statistical and programming environments (e.g., STATA, R, Python) and skilled in visualization platforms (e.g., Tableau).
