Role Overview
As a Building Supervisor working independently, your primary responsibility involves maintaining cleanliness and overseeing non-cleaning tasks at a school premises under the direction of your designated line manager or another authorised person in compliance with Education Authority standards and procedures.
Main Duties and Responsibilities
- Secure the premises including school meal areas by opening and closing them, locking all windows, doors, and gates, and handling keys responsibly, including allocation and collection from cleaning staff.
- Operate and manage security equipment such as alarm systems and CCTV, reporting faults and attending to after-hours incidents such as break-ins and vandalism promptly to maintain site security.
- Conduct routine monitoring and maintenance of mechanical services, including heating/boiler systems, lighting, fuel requisitioning, and keep records of utilities usage like fuel, electricity, and water.
- Replace lighting components safely up to a height of 3.35 meters and inspect fire-fighting equipment, reporting any defects.
- Clean facilities thoroughly, managing cleaning schedules, and supervise cleaning staff where applicable, ensuring all standards are met while also personally performing cleaning duties.
- Maintain external grounds and pathways, ensuring they are free of litter and safe, including application of grit or salt during icy conditions.
- Clear drains, gullies, kitchen grease traps, and manage waste disposal including daily emptying and cleaning of bins throughout the premises.
- Support school activities by preparing rooms for exams or events and assist in setting up and cleaning rooms used for both educational and food consumption purposes.
- Manage delivery and dispatch of goods and materials, including school meals and laundry.
- Maintain accurate records including reports on cleaning, defects, equipment maintenance, staff attendance, and monitor contractor work activity.
- Carry out handyman duties within your capability while complying with all applicable health and safety legislation, including COSHH regulations and Codes of Practice.
Essential Qualifications and Capabilities
- Minimum of six months relevant experience as an assistant or full building supervisor, caretaker, or cleaner within a school setting.
- Must be a key holder who can respond promptly to calls at any hour, including unsociable times.
- Good knowledge of building supervisor responsibilities, health and safety requirements, manual handling regulations, and security systems usage.
- Strong interpersonal, communication, administrative, planning, and decision-making skills.
- Ability to work effectively both independently and as part of a team while demonstrating commitment to the school's values and ethos.
Desirable Criteria
- Hold a NEBOSH Health and Safety qualification or an equivalent higher-level certification.
- Experience with industrial cleaning equipment and key holding duties including opening, closing premises and alarm system management.
Additional Information
The role requires an Enhanced Disclosure of Criminal Background due to regulated activity involving work with children or young people. The successful candidate must cover the cost of the Enhanced Disclosure certificate. The Education Authority is an equal opportunities employer.
