Associate Application Owner – Open Banking

About the Role

Absa Group, a financial institution with more than a century of history, is looking for an Associate Application Owner to support the day-to-day management and performance of its open banking applications in Mauritius. The position is part of a wider growth journey focused on innovation, service quality, and customer-centric digital banking.

This role works alongside the Application Owner and different internal and external teams to help keep open banking services reliable, secure, and aligned with business goals. It also offers exposure to application lifecycle activities, delivery support, operational control, and continuous improvement.

Key Responsibilities

The role covers application support, monitoring, issue resolution, stakeholder coordination, project assistance, testing, and continuous learning. It also carries responsibility for maintaining service quality, documenting processes, supporting users, and helping improve the overall open banking experience.

Application Management and Availability

• Track application health, incidents, and system alerts on an ongoing basis.
• Help resolve technical and operational problems, and escalate when required.
• Keep application records, configuration details, and operating procedures up to date.
• Make sure resilience measures are in place for the open banking applications and are tested at an agreed regular frequency.
• Support ongoing stability and availability in line with committed service levels and KPI tracking.
• Maintain security and scalability for the banking solutions under your scope.

Collaboration and Stakeholder Support

• Work with business teams to understand needs, identify improvement opportunities, and help implement changes.
• Provide second-line support to internal users for open banking issues escalated from the helpdesk.
• Review incidents and coordinate with vendors or technical teams to drive resolution.
• Escalate serious or unresolved matters to the Application Owner.
• Assist with user guides, training material, and simple support documentation.

Projects and Initiatives

• Help prepare project documents, user stories, and test plans.
• Support delivery work by coordinating with technical teams and stakeholders.
• Follow up on milestones, timelines, and deliverables under the direction of the Application Owner.

Customer Experience

• Keep a strong customer-first mindset and ensure queries and calls are handled as a priority.
• Support enhancements that improve usability and customer experience across digital banking platforms.
• Take part in internal brainstorming sessions for new products, services, or updates to existing offerings.

Testing and Quality Assurance

• Take part in functional, regression, and integration testing for application changes.
• Record testing outcomes and flag any mismatches or defects for follow-up.

Personal Development

• Own personal development planning, review preparation, and related documentation.
• Use the skills matrix to identify training needs and agree a development plan with the team leader.
• Complete agreed learning actions within the required timelines.
• Build understanding of open banking applications, processes, and regulatory requirements through training.
• Stay current on emerging technologies and trends in open banking and digital banking.
• Work under guidance while gradually taking on greater responsibility and technical depth.

Risk, Governance, and Compliance

• Identify and reduce risks affecting open banking applications.
• Contribute to stronger governance, controls, compliance, and overall risk management for the function.
• Carry out all duties in line with regulatory obligations, the enterprise-wide risk framework, and internal policies and standards.
• Understand and manage risks and incidents relevant to the role.

Preferred Qualifications and Experience

This role is suited to someone with a bachelor’s degree in IT, Computer Science, or equivalent experience. The employer is looking for 4 to 5 years of experience in IT support, application management, open banking, digital banking, or financial technology. A minimum AWS certification requirement applies, specifically AWS Certified Cloud Practitioner, and at least 1 year of hands-on experience on the AWS platform is also mentioned.

Exposure to cross-functional collaboration is preferred, along with a willingness to support both project delivery and operational activities. The ideal candidate should be eager to learn, accept guidance, and grow into broader responsibility over time.

Technical and Soft Skills

Applicants should have a basic understanding of banking applications, banking platforms, and the Open Banking Framework. Familiarity with testing methods, incident handling, and documentation is important. Exposure to APIs, cloud services, or application security is an advantage. Coding or scripting ability in tools such as Python, NodeJS, or SQL is also an added benefit, particularly for automation, data extraction, or application enhancements.

Strong organizational ability, attention to detail, clear communication, teamwork, customer focus, analytical thinking, and problem-solving are all important for success in the role.

Education Requirement

Further Education and Training Certificate (FETC): Physical, Mathematical, Computer and Life Sciences is required.
