Position Overview
The STEM Instructor (Laboratory) oversees the daily management and smooth operation of the science laboratories at the school. This role ensures the labs remain safe, compliant, and orderly while providing both technical and instructional assistance for hands-on science lessons. Main duties include maintaining laboratory safety, preparing practical materials, managing equipment upkeep, handling inventory and purchases, and supporting the delivery of top-tier science education through efficient laboratory functioning.
Primary Responsibilities
- Ensure the laboratory environment is safe, clean, and well-organized following prescribed safety protocols.
- Display and regularly update laboratory safety rules, emergency response procedures, and evacuation plans.
- Conduct regular inspections and maintenance to guarantee safe operation of all lab apparatus, equipment, and personal protective gear.
- Comply fully with relevant regulations in labeling, storing, handling, and managing chemicals, including chemical explosive precursors, in alignment with the Globally Harmonised System (GHS).
- Respond quickly and correctly to chemical spills and manage safe disposal of chemical and biological waste.
- Keep Safety Data Sheets (SDS) fully updated and accessible for all laboratory chemicals.
- Maintain functional emergency equipment such as eyewash stations, safety showers, fire extinguishers, and first-aid supplies, ensuring they are fully stocked and operational.
- Prepare laboratory setups, including apparatus, stock solutions, reagents, and experimental materials in support of practical lessons, tests, and teacher demonstrations.
- Offer technical support during lab sessions and make sure lab spaces and equipment are thoroughly cleaned and restored post-use.
- Provide guidance to teachers and students on safe and effective use of laboratory materials, equipment, and procedures.
- Procure laboratory consumables and fresh materials needed for experiments and related activities.
- Maintain teaching aids, scientific models, and specialized instructional resources in good working order.
- Perform regular risk assessments to identify and minimize hazards within laboratory operations.
- Inspect equipment routinely; report malfunctions promptly; organize repairs with facilities management, including for gas and water systems.
- Replace broken glassware and carry out minor repairs on lab apparatus, keeping detailed maintenance and damage logs.
- Conduct scheduled preventative maintenance during school breaks, including inspections, stock reviews, cupboard organization, and upkeep of benches and fittings.
- Maintain comprehensive usage logs, inventory databases, and stock registers.
- Execute semester-end inventory counts and compile detailed reports for review by department leadership and STEM management.
- Source and recommend cost-effective laboratory equipment and supplies; manage supplier quotations and negotiate purchases.
- Coordinate procurement logistics and delivery of materials.
- Support laboratory budgeting, monitor expenditures, and contribute to finance-related administrative tasks.
- Engage in professional development and technical trainings to stay current with laboratory safety regulations, science education trends, and enhanced lab practices.
- Remain informed regarding updates in health and safety protocols relative to laboratory environments.
- Carry out any other duties assigned by school leadership or STEM management.
