Role Overview

Join Beca's Southern Water team in Christchurch as a River Engineer where you will contribute to meaningful projects involving rivers and waterways across New Zealand. Engage throughout the entire project life cycle, from initial planning and option assessments to detailed design and onsite construction delivery. This role offers diverse experiences with river, stormwater, and water resource initiatives, requiring practical engineering judgement in real-world settings. Key Responsibilities

  • Conduct geomorphology assessments and develop options, designs, and construction plans for river works.
  • Collaborate with clients throughout the South Island and New Zealand.

Candidate Profile

The ideal candidate is an intermediate to senior-level River Engineer with solid technical expertise and a pragmatic, solution-oriented mindset. You will be experienced in applying theory to practical challenges and supporting the delivery of high-quality river engineering projects.

  • Apply geomorphological concepts practically to varied river systems.
  • Use hydrology and hydraulic modelling to inform evidence-based decisions.
  • Conduct scour assessments and analyze river behavior during high-flow scenarios.
  • Lead design activities from concept through detailed engineering for river-related constructions.
  • Support construction phase activities through monitoring and on-site collaboration.
  • Bring project management or site experience as a valuable asset.

You should have consultancy experience demonstrating strong ownership, prioritization skills, and adherence to quality, budget, and timelines. A collaborative approach to multidisciplinary team efforts and an understanding of New Zealand’s practice and relevant standards for river works design are essential.

Qualifications and Credentials

  • Chartered Professional Engineer (CPEng) status or active progression towards achieving it.
  • Relevant tertiary qualification in civil engineering or a closely related field.
