We are seeking a skilled Project Engineer to support the planning, coordination, and delivery of asphalt and minor civil construction projects from start to finish. This role requires close collaboration with project managers, site supervisors, clients, suppliers, and subcontractors to ensure projects meet all safety, timing, budgetary, and quality goals.

Key Responsibilities

• Assist with project planning, sequencing, and implementation for asphalt paving and civil works.
• Create and update project schedules, construction methodologies, and work programmes.
• Coordinate teams, subcontractors, materials, and machinery to meet project targets.
• Track work progress and ensure compliance with safety and specifications.
• Manage project paperwork including work packs, inspection reports, and site records.
• Support budgeting, forecasting, cost control, and financial reporting efforts.
• Measure completed work and help prepare progress claims and subcontractor evaluations.
• Ensure all work complies with quality standards, contract specs, and company policies.
• Review engineering drawings and contract documentation to guide project execution.
• Assist procurement processes for materials and subcontractor engagement.
• Identify risks to project delivery and advise on mitigation measures.
• Communicate and liaise with clients, consultants, local authorities, and stakeholders throughout.
• Help with project closeout including final documentation, handovers, and as-built records.
• Maintain a strong focus on health, safety, environmental, and quality standards.

Qualifications and Experience

• Degree or Diploma in Civil Engineering, Construction Engineering, or a related field.
• At least 3 years in a Project Engineer or equivalent role within civil construction.
• Hands-on experience with asphalt paving, pavement construction, roading or civil infrastructure.
• Proficient in interpreting engineering plans, specs, and contracts.
• Knowledgeable in construction methods and asphalt surfacing operations.
• Skilled in project scheduling, resource coordination, and programme management.
• Commercially aware with experience in budgeting and cost forecasting.
• Strong organisational, problem-solving, and communication abilities.
• Capable of managing multiple stakeholders and working efficiently in a busy environment.
• Dedicated to quality assurance, safety, and continuous improvement practices.
• Holder of a full New Zealand Driver Licence.

Preferred Skills

• Civil Engineering qualification.
• Experience with NZS3910 contract standards.
• Understanding of New Zealand construction codes and specifications.
• Involvement with asphalt production, surfacing, or pavement rehabilitation projects.
• Familiarity with project management and reporting software tools.
