Join the University of Canterbury in Christchurch, New Zealand as a Mechanical Engineering PhD student working under the guidance of Dr. David Denkenberger, the Director and Co-founder of the Alliance to Feed the Earth in Disasters (ALLFED). This role offers a unique chance to focus solely on research without the obligation of coursework.

Research Topics

Research areas encompass global catastrophic risk mitigation strategies including but not limited to:

  • Design and analysis of satellites capable of communication with standard cell phones.
  • Evaluating the costs and scalability of advanced greenhouse technologies.
  • Transforming paper manufacturing facilities to produce proteins and carbohydrates from leaves.
  • Assessing the impact of solar obscuration events on energy infrastructure.
  • Developing rapid infrastructure recovery methods.
  • Exploring cost-effective and scalable seaweed production with limited infrastructure and sunlight.
  • Innovating solutions for home heating during widespread electricity outages.
  • Optimizing logistics for food and feedstock transportation under catastrophic conditions.

Additional Information

Students will be engaged in impactful research aimed at addressing critical challenges in disaster resilience and food security. The absence of coursework allows candidates to dedicate themselves fully to their research projects.
