About the Role
JoVE seeks a seasoned Peer Review Editor to manage the complete peer review workflow, from manuscript submission to final editorial decision-making. The role involves coordinating reviewers, ensuring the quality and integrity of reviews, and upholding JoVE's standards for scientific rigor and ethics. The goal is to facilitate a transparent, prompt, and constructive experience for both authors and reviewers.
Key Responsibilities
- Oversee the entire peer review process for assigned manuscripts, including selecting and inviting reviewers, monitoring reviews, preparing decisions, and managing revisions.
- Develop, evaluate, and sustain a high-quality pool of reviewers, ensuring coverage of diverse expertise; cultivate relationships with top reviewers to enable efficient and impartial evaluations.
- Track and manage timelines and throughput metrics such as time to first decision and reviewer responsiveness; proactively address and resolve any delays to streamline workflows.
- Coordinate with editorial and production teams to ensure a seamless submission-to-publication author experience.
- Identify and apply process enhancements, including creating templates, leveraging automation tools, and developing dashboards to shorten review cycles and improve review quality.
- Maintain precise documentation within manuscript management systems (e.g., Editorial Manager, Monday.com), covering reviewer activity, editorial decisions, communications, and policy exceptions.
Qualifications and Skills
- A bachelor's degree in life sciences or related discipline; advanced degrees are advantageous.
- A minimum of five years’ experience in scholarly publishing with direct involvement in peer review management.
- Familiarity with peer review models including single-blind, double-blind, open review, and open access publishing workflows; awareness of current trends in scholarly communication.
- Proficient in manuscript management software (Editorial Manager preferred) and comfortable utilizing automation or AI tools to enhance efficiency.
- Excellent written communication and editorial decision-making skills, capable of distilling complex reviewer feedback into clear and actionable editorial outcomes.
- Strong organizational and project management expertise, adept at operating under tight deadlines and in fast-moving environments.
