Role Overview

We are looking for a seasoned Mechanical Design Engineer to work on cutting-edge technology including high temperature superconducting magnets, cryogenic refrigeration, vacuum technology, and pressure vessels. Salaries range from £50,000 to £65,000 depending on experience, plus benefits.

Responsibilities

• Develop 3D CAD models and detailed engineering drawings
• Conduct engineering analyses such as finite element analysis (FEA), simulations, and calculations
• Design components for optimal performance, manufacturability, and compliance with safety standards
• Collaborate with multidisciplinary colleagues including engineers, physicists, and external suppliers
• Support testing, validation, and integration of mechanical systems
• Prepare comprehensive technical documentation

Ideal Candidate Profile

This position suits engineers experienced in highly technical, physics-centered, or extreme environment systems requiring deep understanding of system behavior. Preferred backgrounds include:

• Superconducting magnet or high-field applications
• Cryogenic engineering including thermal management and cryostats
• Vacuum system design and pressure environment management
• Scientific research instrumentation such as particle accelerators or experimental physics setups
• Aerospace and space systems with emphasis on reliability under extreme conditions
• Advanced energy systems like nuclear fusion/fission, high-power electrical, turbomachinery, or systems involving electromagnetic and thermal stresses

Expertise with challenges such as thermal contraction, electromagnetic loads, vacuum compatibility, and stringent safety design is crucial.

Requirements

• A degree or equivalent experience in Mechanical Engineering
• Proven expertise in CAD and complex mechanical system design
• Experience working on sophisticated, high-performance engineering projects as described above
• Capability to function within multidisciplinary teams

Preferred Qualifications

• Direct exposure to any of the industries mentioned in the ideal profile
• Knowledge of electromagnetic mechanical interactions, cryogenic material behavior, and vacuum system design principles
• Experience with safety-critical or highly regulated environments
