Job description

Role Overview

We are looking for an experienced Transport Planner to join a busy and expanding logistics team in the Mid-West region of Ireland. This full-time, permanent role reports directly to the Transport Manager and involves coordinating daily transport operations to meet customer demands while maximizing operational efficiency, service levels, and profitability.

Core Responsibilities

  • Create and maintain cost-efficient daily transport schedules utilizing Transport Management Systems (TMS).
  • Plan collections and deliveries in accordance with customer service agreements.
  • Ensure all transportation routes comply with driver hours regulations, Working Time Directive mandates, and customer timelines.
  • Optimize fleet usage by reducing empty runs and avoiding unnecessary expenses.
  • Distribute workloads evenly among drivers and vehicles to maximize operational effectiveness.
  • Collaborate effectively with customers, depots, subcontractors, drivers, and internal teams to guarantee smooth logistics operations.
  • Respond to changing operational conditions by adjusting routes and re-planning as needed.
  • Identify and implement improvements in transport planning procedures and systems.
  • Assist in the planning of workforce and driver resources in alignment with projected workload volumes.
  • Contribute to daily and weekly operation reviews to assess risks and opportunities for enhancements.
  • Provide ongoing operational guidance and support to transport staff and drivers.
  • Verify accurate completion of transport documentation such as delivery proofs and job costing records.
  • Maintain high levels of customer service through proactive communication and careful planning.

Required Skills and Experience

  • Prior experience in transport planning, logistics, or supply chain roles.
  • Proficiency with Transport Management Systems and expertise in route optimization.
  • Understanding of transport regulations, driver working hours, and compliance standards.
  • Strong organizational and time management capabilities.
  • Analytical skills with effective problem-solving aptitude.
  • Detail-oriented with high accuracy in task execution.
  • Commercial insight into transport cost factors.
  • Excellent communication skills and ability to manage various stakeholders.
  • Ability to foster strong working relationships internally and externally.
  • Experience creating operational reports and analyzing performance metrics.
