Job Role
As a Joinery Designer, you will be responsible for creating detailed joinery designs and workshop drawings for kitchens, wardrobes, commercial fit-outs, and custom timber features. Your daily activities will include interpreting architectural plans, consulting with project participants to clarify needs, and producing precise CAD drawings and cut lists to facilitate workshop production. Selecting suitable materials and fittings, ensuring compliance with building codes and safety regulations, and coordinating with the production team to address design or manufacturing challenges will be key aspects of your role. You will also assist with on-site measurements, update documentation throughout projects, and maintain clear records of modifications or variations. This position is full-time and requires working on-site in Christchurch.
Qualifications and Skills Needed
- Proven background in joinery or cabinetry design, including the ability to prepare comprehensive workshop drawings and detailed specifications.
- Proficiency with CAD software or similar design applications tailored for joinery, cabinetry, and interior fit-out projects.
- Strong knowledge of timber characteristics, hardware components, construction techniques, and fabrication practicalities.
- Competency in reading and interpreting architectural and engineering drawings and converting them into feasible joinery solutions.
- Good communication skills to effectively liaise with clients, builders, and workshop teams, as well as to document design choices clearly.
- High attention to detail, spatial judgement, and problem-solving aptitude to manage complex or custom joinery requirements.
- Relevant educational background in joinery, interior design, drafting, or a closely related discipline, or equivalent practical experience.
- Commitment to maintaining safe work environments and good knowledge of local building codes and industry standards.
