About FION Energy and Role Overview

FION Energy creates software that enables design, intelligent control, and monitoring of industrial energy storage and photovoltaic (PV) systems. Their AI-powered platform enhances battery management for applications such as peak shaving, self-consumption optimization, spot market trading, and flexibility marketing, effectively lowering electricity expenditures with payback times between two and four years. The team is based in Berlin and has operational batteries serving paying clients.

Key Responsibilities

As an early team member, you will contribute to building a comprehensive end-to-end platform encompassing machine learning, optimization, data streaming, control layers, and an edge device deployed at customer sites. You will engage directly with the CTO and co-founder, taking ownership in developing the cloud data and control infrastructure, the proprietary edge stack, and various edge-cloud integrations according to immediate business priorities. The role demands agility to shift between strategic planning and practical implementation.

Job Requirements

• A minimum of five years’ experience in professional software engineering.
• Proven expertise in deploying and managing IoT or edge devices in real-world production environments.
• Experience handling physical hardware challenges onsite.
• Strong proficiency in Linux, as edge devices run on this operating system.
• Hands-on experience integrating devices via industrial communication protocols like Modbus, MQTT, OPC-UA, or comparable technologies.
• An ownership-driven mindset aimed at shaping the platform architecture rather than simply executing assigned tasks.

Preferred qualifications include:

• Knowledge of the energy sector, including concepts of power, energy phases, and grid operations.
• Experience managing fleets involving OTA updates, device monitoring, and remote debugging across multiple locations.
• Familiarity with embedded Linux systems (such as Yocto or Buildroot) and containerized deployments on the edge.
• Expertise in evaluating and selecting industrial edge hardware.
• Experience with cloud IoT platforms like AWS IoT or Azure IoT Hub.
• Programming skills in Go, Rust, or Java applied in IoT or systems contexts.
• Proficiency in German language to communicate with customers and partners.
