About the role
The Napier Conference Center is looking for an experienced and committed Venue Technician to join its Technician Team on a part-time basis. In this position, you will contribute to the smooth delivery of a wide variety of technical services for clients and help keep the venue safe, organised, and fully operational.
You will work closely with the Senior Venue Technician to make sure the required furniture, equipment, and audio systems are ready for each booking. The role suits someone who can confidently handle technical production tasks and work independently in a busy live-event environment.
Key duties
- Prepare all extra hired equipment requested by clients so it is ready at the beginning of each booking.
- Train and oversee casual event staff so their work meets venue standards and client expectations.
- Inspect, maintain, and test technical equipment regularly to ensure it remains safe and compliant, including electrical test and tag checks.
- Store stage drapes and related equipment safely when not in use, ensuring fire-retardant certification remains current.
- Track and manage technical consumables to support the reliable operation of portable venue equipment.
About you
You are expected to bring strong practical knowledge of sound, lighting, and audio/visual equipment, along with the confidence to work without close supervision. A solid understanding of the Guide to Safe Work Practices in the New Zealand Theatre and Entertainment Industry is also important for this role.
The position also calls for the following qualifications and experience: NZQA Level 2, experience using sound, lighting and AV equipment, the ability to work unsupervised, a working at heights credential, a valid First Aid Certificate, and a current driver licence.
What we offer
- Five weeks of annual leave after two years of service.
- Discounted health insurance through the workplace scheme plus an eye test subsidy.
- Retail discounts and support for further study.
- Employee Assistance Program (OCP).
- Quarterly values awards, birthday vouchers, and access to a social club.
- Annual free flu vaccinations.
- Ka Awatea Cultural Wānanga and NCC Kapa Haka.
- Te Reo Māori language classes.
Working arrangement
This is a part-time position of 24 hours per week on a rostered basis, and the roster may fall on any day from Monday through Sunday.
