Role Overview

We are seeking a Technical Writer to lead the documentation efforts for Nabu Casa's Hardware and Cloud products. This important role involves managing the entire user documentation lifecycle—from introductory setup guides to in-depth API and integration documentation—helping a global tech-savvy community of users and developers. You will collaborate closely with engineers to convert technical complexity into clear, reliable content that reduces dependency on support.

Key Responsibilities

• Manage and maintain accurate, accessible documentation for Nabu Casa Hardware and Cloud.
• Develop new documentation aligned with product features, integrations, and release cycles.
• Collaborate with engineering teams to research and validate technical content.
• Continuously review and update existing materials by identifying outdated content and improving clarity and structure.
• Establish and enforce documentation standards, style guides, and templates to ensure consistency.
• Evaluate feedback from community, support, and internal teams to prioritize documentation improvements.
• Enhance developer-related documentation including API guides, integrations, and contributor instructions to support the Open Home Foundation community.
• Monitor quality metrics such as common support issues and community feedback, reporting findings regularly.

Required Qualifications and Skills

• Proven expertise in technical writing evidenced by a portfolio focusing on developer or product documentation.
• Competence in reading and understanding code (Python, YAML, REST APIs) to independently produce accurate technical content.
• Familiarity with smart home hardware and electronics, capable of basic troubleshooting.
• Experience with docs-as-code methodologies, including Git, Markdown, and static site generators like MkDocs or Docusaurus.
• Strong initiative and ability to self-direct work and identify documentation needs without supervision.
• Excellent skills in managing stakeholders and extracting technical information efficiently from busy engineers.

Desirable Skills

• Familiarity with Home Assistant or similar open-source/self-hosted software projects.
• Experience handling documentation for community-driven projects with multiple contributors.
• Systematic approach to auditing extensive documentation collections and prioritizing improvements.
• Comfort working asynchronously in a fully remote, distributed team environment.

What We Offer

Nabu Casa is a fully remote company employing people globally with local salaried contracts. This full-time role involves 40 hours per week without fixed hours; however, approximately three hours of daily overlap are encouraged for team communication. The role reports to the Vice President of Commercial.

Compensation aims at the 75th percentile of market rates specific to role, seniority, and location, with approximate yearly ranges provided for primary countries such as Greece (45,700–56,100 EUR), Hungary (16,100,000–20,250,000 HUF), Ireland (52,800–70,500 EUR), Italy (54,000–64,400 EUR), Poland (150,000–215,000 PLN), Portugal (47,900–61,200 EUR), Romania (215,000–275,000 RON), Spain (50,500–63,600 EUR), UK (57,100–73,800 GBP), and negotiable for others. These ranges may be adjusted based on experience and qualifications.
