About Rocket Lab
Rocket Lab is a comprehensive space enterprise that offers end-to-end services including launch operations, satellite and spacecraft design, manufacturing, and payload delivery. Focused on making space accessible, the company supports critical missions such as scientific research, Earth monitoring, climate change initiatives, national security, and technological demonstrations. Their Electron rocket ranks as the second most frequently launched U.S. rocket annually, successfully deploying over 230 satellites. The upcoming medium-lift reusable Neutron rocket aims to serve larger constellation launches. Rocket Lab’s Space Systems division designs and manufactures satellites and components for missions including those for NASA and the James Webb Space Telescope.
Role Overview
In the role of RF Systems Engineer I - Operations, you will ensure that the launch vehicle's Telemetry, Tracking, and Command (TT&C) systems and corresponding ground stations are prepared for operations. You will collaborate closely with RF, Guidance, Navigation & Control (GNC), Flight Software, and Operations teams to define TT&C strategies, manage communication interfaces, and confirm readiness supporting mission success. This is a practical, operational role directly impacting launch preparation and post-launch analysis.
Key Responsibilities
- Examine mission needs, flight paths, and communication link analyses to determine optimal TT&C setup.
- Develop and support TT&C planning especially for atypical mission profiles.
- Coordinate with GNC, Flight Software, and Operations teams to ensure seamless systems integration.
- Assist in creating and maintaining space-to-ground Interface Control Documents and configuration files for RF hardware/software like modems and transceivers.
- Keep alignment between mission specifications and operational configurations accurate.
- Create Python or MATLAB scripts to process telemetry data effectively and analyze hardware-in-the-loop and operational datasets.
- Detect anomalies, log issues, and drive resolutions through completion.
- Review results from integrated system tests to validate radio and ground infrastructure performance.
- Support mission preparation and ground station verification activities.
- Assign ground stations based on coverage and availability requirements.
- Prepare mission interface documents and coordinate work orders.
- Participate in readiness reviews for vehicle, range, and launch commitments.
- Conduct analysis after flight and communicate insights.
- Drive continuous improvement of processes and procedures.
Success Factors
- Ownership of assigned systems with accountable delivery.
- Proactive risk escalation and applying solid engineering judgment.
- Effective, clear communication across teams.
- High-quality technical documentation and presentation skills.
- Positive contribution to a collaborative and mission-focused culture.
Required Qualifications and Skills
- Bachelor’s degree or diploma in Electronics, Communications, RF engineering or a related discipline.
- Strong foundation in RF concepts and capability to perform RF analyses.
- Proficiency in Python or MATLAB for data analysis and telemetry processing.
- Hands-on experience integrating/testing RF systems and utilizing RF test instruments such as vector network analyzers and spectrum analyzers.
- Proven knowledge of systems engineering methodologies and documentation practices including requirements, design specs, and test plans.
- Ability to work effectively under pressure to meet tight deadlines.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal relationship skills.
Preferred Skills
- Practical knowledge of radio communication systems.
- Understanding of modulation and coding methods.
- Familiarity with system-level RF assessments for spacecraft and ground stations including link budget calculations.
Values and Work Ethic
- Proactive approach with a mindset of "How can I contribute?"
- Strong personal accountability and ownership.
- Risk-aware and informed decision making.
- Clear and action-oriented communication style.
- Professional demeanor and high commitment to safety standards.
- Flexibility to support team needs beyond immediate responsibilities.
Additional Information
