Role Summary

The role of Direct Support Worker – House Parent is to supervise residents and uphold the safety and security standards of the facility and its inhabitants. This position requires collaboration with the team to ensure smooth, safe, and secure operations. The incumbent fosters positive, supportive interactions with youth while maintaining high standards of service, cleanliness, and safety, particularly in food preparation aligned with health and organizational standards. Additionally, the role supports youth in establishing therapeutic relationships and contributing to their care plans aimed at community reintegration.

Key Responsibilities

Supervise residents within the facility and during community activities in a lawful and safe manner.
Provide ongoing personal, practical, and moral support to youth.
Develop therapeutic relationships to facilitate effective interventions.
Communicate clearly and respectfully with residents, staff, professionals, and the public, maintaining confidentiality and fairness.
Organize and participate in group activities including life skills training and recreational programming.
Support programming activities such as sports, recreation, craft, and cleaning initiatives.
Use environmental context to teach problem-solving and conflict resolution.
Adopt an age-appropriate parental role emphasizing daily living skills, support, encouragement, and boundary setting.
Participate in developing and implementing case plans focusing on life skill goals.
Report client progress and changes effectively to caseworkers.
Fulfill shift duties, reporting, and logging responsibilities.
Maintain therapeutic conduct in interpersonal relations within the facility.
Encourage youth to establish family and community support networks post-discharge.
Adhere to policies of Bethany Home, The Salvation Army, and relevant ministries.
Manage meal preparation by planning nutritious menus, ordering supplies, maintaining inventory, and adhering to budgetary constraints.
Collaborate with dieticians to ensure meals meet nutritional standards.
Engage youth in learning cooking and menu planning skills essential for independence.
Develop flexible meal schedules and recipe resources that encourage youth participation.
Ensure safe storage, proper dating, and rotation of all food items.
Regularly inspect and maintain kitchen equipment and cleanliness standards.
Assume delegated responsibilities for facility health and safety compliance.
Monitor facility safety, including appliance temperatures and incident handling.
Address incidents and crises with safety and therapeutic approaches.
Perform housekeeping, meal preparation, vehicle cleanliness, and other client care duties.
Complete documentation related to client safety, incidents, and daily events.
Participate actively in team meetings, contribute to programming decisions, and support coordinated teamwork.
Maintain respectful, dignified, and confidential relationships with residents, staff, and external contacts.
Manage materials and equipment responsibly, including grocery purchasing via a corporate credit card.
Work in a residential youth group home environment involving travel and exposure to challenging conditions such as noise, verbal abuse, physical risks, and environmental extremes.

Qualifications and Experience

Completion of a two-year post-secondary or college program, ideally in Social Science or related fields.
Diplomas or degrees in Humanities, Social Work, Youth Care, Psychology, or related areas are advantageous.
Current or willingness to obtain Non-Violent Crisis Intervention Certificate.
First Aid and CPR certification required.
Clean driver’s abstract mandatory.
Food Safe Certificate essential.
Training in Therapeutic Crisis Intervention (TCI).
Minimum of one year experience in a similar or related role, preferably with mental health and addiction exposure.
Familiarity with the Behaviour Based Model.
Proficient with Microsoft Office, internet navigation, and keyboarding skills.

Working Conditions

Facility includes residential youth group home settings with possible exposure to noise, verbal abuse, physical risks, and infectious diseases.
Physical activities may involve bending, stretching, climbing, lifting up to 20 pounds, and standing or walking for extended periods.
Outdoor programming in various temperature environments.
Potentially limited rest during shifts and driving responsibilities under stressful conditions.

Compensation and Scheduling

This is a full-time role requiring 40 hours per week. The salary range is approximately CAD 26.39 to 27.54 per hour, dependent on experience, qualifications, and market factors.
