Role overview

This is a permanent, full-time School Wide Practitioner vacancy based in the Porirua regional office, with the possibility of working across the Greater Wellington area depending on operational needs. The role sits within a collaborative trans-disciplinary team where relational practice and responsive working are highly valued.

The position supports the education system’s wider work to improve attendance, lift achievement, and strengthen learning support through evidence-based practice. The central purpose of the role is to coach and assist educators to implement the Positive Behaviour for Learning: School-Wide framework to a high standard, in line with international best practice and with consistent delivery across New Zealand.

In this role, you will help deliver high-quality special education support to schools and early learning settings, as well as to learners, parents, families/whānau, caregivers, and other service users, guided by Te Whāriki, Ka Hikitia, and the New Zealand Curriculum Framework.

Salary and employment terms

The remuneration band is $85,416 to $100,866 per annum, plus KiwiSaver. The final salary will be set according to the successful applicant’s experience and capabilities.

What you will do

What we are looking for

  • Practical knowledge of the schooling sector and the legislation that applies to it.
  • Proven experience building partnerships and maintaining effective relationships to achieve shared outcomes.
  • A tertiary qualification in education, psychology, or another relevant field such as special education.
  • Knowledge of child development, learning, and behaviour.
  • Familiarity with assessment and intervention approaches, including inclusive and ecological frameworks.
  • Successful experience in classroom settings or comparable environments, including work with students who have special needs.
  • Strong teaching practice and the ability to provide timely, high-quality advice in written and spoken form.
  • Confidence using data and insights to spot trends, risks, and opportunities.
  • Ability to work effectively in an integrated team and solve problems collaboratively.
  • Understanding of, and commitment to, the principles of Te Tiriti o Waitangi.
  • Willingness to follow Public Service Standards of Integrity and Conduct.

Te Mahau – Education Services provides leadership and joined-up support to the education sector. Its work covers learning support, advice and regulation for schools and early learning services, and curriculum support. The team also works collaboratively across the Ministry to share practice, insights, and learning that help shape guidance, design, and policy.

The wider group works with early childhood and schooling sectors, providers, and communities to help children and young people achieve their potential.
