We pride ourselves on a collaborative culture that encourages innovative thinking, transparent communication, and a passion for solving complex challenges together.
Role Overview
This hands-on Mechatronics Engineer role covers the complete hardware lifecycle. Your tasks will range from assembling and testing camera and IoT devices in the lab to deploying, calibrating, and fine-tuning hardware in live agricultural environments such as packhouses. Reporting to a seasoned Mechatronics Engineering Lead, you will have the opportunity to develop skills across design, prototyping, installation, and field support, while contributing directly to impactful R&D projects.
Key Responsibilities
- Construct, wire, solder, and bench-test camera mounts, sensor configurations, and IoT hardware components.
- Rapidly prototype using techniques such as 3D printing, laser cutting, and fabrication.
- Travel locally and overseas to deploy and verify hardware systems at customer facilities.
- Assist with 3D CAD modeling (using Fusion 360) and PCB design (using KiCAD), refining designs based on operational feedback.
- Troubleshoot mechanical, electrical, and networking issues and perform quality assurance tests prior to shipping.
- Deliver Tier-2 hardware support and maintain updated assembly instructions, schematics, and Bills of Materials.
Candidate Profile
- Possess a Degree or Diploma in Mechatronics, Electrical, Mechanical, or Automation Engineering, or have equivalent hands-on trade experience.
- Have 0 to 3 years experience in mechatronics assembly, prototyping, or onsite installation, with project or academic portfolios welcomed.
- Skilled with manual and power tools, soldering irons, multimeters, and familiar with IP cameras, 12V/24V/PoE power systems, and microcontrollers.
- Pragmatic and self-motivated, adaptable to working both in lab environments and in active packhouse settings.
- Hold a full New Zealand Driver's Licence and have the readiness to travel as required.
Why Work At Hectre?
- Contribute directly to impactful technology supporting sustainable global food supply systems.
- Experience working in some of the world's most scenic orchards and packhouses, observing your innovations in action.
- Opportunity for continuous professional growth guided by an experienced engineering lead, encompassing all stages from conceptual design to field deployment and maintenance.
- Join a supportive, trust-based team culture that values autonomy, constructive feedback, and enjoyment in the work.
