About the Opportunity

SGS ISL is pleased to announce the opening of its 2026 apprenticeship program in collaboration with SOLAS and MTU/DTU. This program provides one candidate with the chance to start a fulfilling career in the pharmaceutical science sector while working towards a recognised qualification. The apprenticeship is a two-year program beginning in September 2026, culminating in the awarding of a Higher Certificate in Science (Laboratory Technician). There is also scope for further education to Level 8 qualifications.

Program Structure and Responsibilities

The successful apprentice will gain practical laboratory experience while pursuing formal education, attending college two days per week and working on-site at our Ringaskiddy laboratory three days per week during academic terms. During holiday periods, the apprentice will work five days on site.

• Maintain laboratory glassware and equipment
• Collect and log samples systematically
• Manage ordering of chemicals and lab consumables
• Dispose of laboratory waste following protocols
• Perform daily calibration checks and archiving of data
• Support preparation of chemical solutions
• Test raw materials as required
• Take responsibility for assigned tasks, ensuring timely and efficient completion
• Adhere strictly to health and safety regulations
• Maintain cleanliness and organization of the work area
• Practice safe conduct for self, colleagues, and clients following company policies
• Comply fully with the company's Code of Integrity and Equality & Diversity Policy

Skills and Knowledge Gained Upon Completion

• Strong grasp of Good Manufacturing Practice (GMP) and Good Distribution Practice (GDP) principles

• Proper labeling of laboratory reagents and samples
• Insights into handling “out of specification” investigations and laboratory investigation reports
• Understanding procurement procedures for QC consumables and vendor interactions
• Familiarity with production processes both upstream and downstream
• Calibration techniques for laboratory equipment
• Basic chemistry techniques such as pipetting, auto-titrations, pH measurement, weighing, volumetric dilutions, volumetric calculations, Karl Fischer titrations, UV, HPLC, LCMS, Particle Size Distribution (PSD), X-Ray Powder Diffraction (XRPD), Thin Layer Chromatography (TLC)
• Knowledge of reporting processes and identifying deviations from GLP/GMP standards

Qualifications

• Leaving Certificate with Grade D/O6 or higher in Ordinary Level including a science subject (Chemistry preferred) and Mathematics or equivalent FETAC Level 5/6 qualification
• Mature candidates with demonstrated interest will also be considered

Location & Employment Details

This position is full-time and based on-site at SGS’ laboratory in Ringaskiddy, County Cork, Ireland. Applicants must be immediately eligible to work in Ireland.
