Role Overview

As a Highway Technician based in INDOT’s Fort Wayne District, you will collaborate closely with the Highway Engineering Assistant to coordinate scheduling and collection of Hot Mix Asphalt (HMA) samples. This includes communicating with the construction team to verify sample records before connecting with Materials and Testing (M&T). Additional support duties include assisting district testing engineers with material recordkeeping, aiding materials engineers in mix design reviews, supporting soils and aggregate laboratory operations, and performing other assigned tasks.

Key Responsibilities

• Adhere to all INDOT safety protocols and policies.
• Operate highway maintenance and traffic equipment for upkeep, repair, and cleaning of roads and right-of-way areas.
• Manage and oversee team work assignments, escalating issues to supervisors as needed.
• Coordinate with contractors ensuring compliance with INDOT standards and specifications.
• Participate in winter duties such as snow and ice removal.
• Conduct routine inspections and maintenance of equipment including minor repairs, refueling, and pre-trip evaluations.
• Maintain and install traffic signs, pavement markings, and route markers.
• Respond to emergencies by performing clean-up, traffic control, lane closures, and barricade placement.

Depending on assignment, additional tasks may include:

• Serving as a Bridge Maintenance Specialist, providing technical guidance, operating specialized equipment, and reporting to supervisors.
• Sampling and testing construction materials per quality specifications, collecting samples from production sites, and accurately documenting results.
• Supporting construction projects through planning, inspection, testing, and facility maintenance tasks.
• Conducting geotechnical laboratory testing on soils and rocks, including advanced tests such as Resilient Modulus, Strength, Proctor, and others.

Candidate Requirements

• Possess or obtain within 90 days a valid Class A or B Commercial Driver’s License (CDL).
• Pass mandatory drug testing as part of employment conditions.
• Understand federal, state, and local highway construction and maintenance regulations and practices.
• Knowledge of drafting and surveying methods.
• Ability to lead and coordinate field crews independently.
• Competency in reading, interpreting, and following technical documentation.
• Capable of working under adverse weather conditions.
• Physically able to lift up to 50 pounds and perform activities such as lifting, dragging, stooping, standing, and prolonged walking.

Additional specialty requirements, if applicable, include:

• Testing: Familiarity with technical standards (AASHTO, ASTM, INDOT, ITM) and successful completion of the INDOT Certified Testing Technician program.
• Construction: Ability to pass the INDOT Certified Inspector program.
• Geotechnical: Passing proficiency exams covering soil classification, electrochemical testing, strength, and resilient modulus measures.

Education and Experience

A High School Diploma or equivalent is required. Relevant experience applying the necessary knowledge and skills in a similar role may suffice. The position may also involve supervisory responsibilities as agency needs dictate.

Compensation and Benefits

The position typically begins at an hourly rate of $24.26, adjustable according to experience and education.
