Role Overview

We are seeking a Data Analyst to join the Insights & Analytics team based in Wellington on a fixed-term, full-time basis until 24 December 2026. This role involves leveraging data analysis to underpin transport policy, strategy, and investment decisions. The analyst will address a variety of transport issues, extract trends, create models, and produce visualisations, transforming data into actionable insights to improve transport outcomes.

Key Duties

• Conduct data analysis to support transport policy and strategic advice.
• Help develop robust, practical modelling and analytical methodologies.
• Manage large datasets by cleaning, validating, analyzing, and visualizing data.
• Prepare clear reports and data visualizations tailored to varied audiences.
• Contribute to analytics projects across the Insights & Analytics group.
• Foster productive relationships with ministry colleagues and external transport agencies.
• Assist in implementing the ministry’s data and analytics approach within the transport sector.

Qualifications and Experience

• Proven experience in data analysis or statistical roles, with proficiency in R programming essential.
• Bachelor’s degree in a relevant discipline.
• Adept at interpreting data and presenting insights to non-technical stakeholders.
• Strong analytical problem-solving abilities with structured thinking.
• Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal.
• Curious mindset with sound judgment and eagerness for continuous learning.
• Ability to work well collaboratively and manage assigned tasks independently.
• Public sector policy analysis experience is considered advantageous.

Additional Details

The position is located in Wellington and is a fixed-term appointment lasting until December 24, 2026. The salary band for this role is NZD 78,983 to 97,246 per annum, dependent upon skills and experience. Applicants must have the legal right to live and work in New Zealand.
