Position Overview
This part-time role at the Lehigh Valley Zoo involves working directly under the Director of Conservation Education to design and assist in delivering mission-driven, educationally valuable, and financially sustainable programs. These initiatives aim to generate earned income and attract grants while maintaining high program quality aligned with the strategic goals of the education department.
Key Responsibilities
- Create, execute, and assess various educational programs both on-site and off-site including camps, animal encounters, and meet-and-greets.
- Collaborate with the Education Director to identify and capitalize on revenue-generating opportunities.
- Build and nurture connections with public and private schools, PTAs, educational boards, and other related organizations.
- Work closely with cross-departmental teams to foster innovation and team growth.
- Develop grant proposals for programs and manage the awarded grants ensuring compliance with all conditions.
- Support the development of engaging curricula tailored to primary and secondary educators that meet Pennsylvania state standards.
- Create adult and family programs that appeal to community interests and encourage repeat visits from the general public.
- Design programs suitable for diverse group sizes and types.
- Partner with community representatives to deliver programming that supports the Zoo’s mission.
- Ensure all programming meets Pennsylvania and Federal Education standards, especially STEAM.
- Manage communication including phone and email inquiries and assist with scheduling all educational offerings.
- Help develop and implement training plans for ambassador animal collections.
- Fulfill additional related duties as assigned.
Required Qualifications and Skills
- Successful completion of criminal record and child abuse history checks.
- Advanced proficiency with Microsoft Office suite including Outlook, Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
- Highly detail-oriented and organized with strong written and oral communication abilities.
- Self-motivated and capable of working independently and collaboratively with accuracy and intent.
- Excellent at managing multiple priorities and meeting deadlines.
- Strong interpersonal skills and leadership qualities with strategic thinking capability.
- Experience in school environments, educational departments at zoos, museums, or similar informal learning centers is desirable.
- Effective public speaking and presentation skills.
- Knowledge and experience in animal handling.
- Willingness to work weekends, holidays, and occasional after-hours or overnight shifts, regardless of weather conditions.
- Possession of a valid driver’s license.
Physical Requirements and Work Environment
The role involves physical activities including walking, sitting, standing, handling objects and tools, and occasionally lifting up to 75 pounds. Vision requirements include the ability to see closely, at a distance, differentiate colors, perceive peripheral vision, and adjust focus.
The work environment can be louder than a typical office and requires working outdoors in various weather conditions.
Compensation and Schedule
- Part-time position with flexible scheduling.
- Year-round, fully on-site role.
- Hourly wage of $14.
