About the Organisation
Amnesty International Aotearoa New Zealand is looking to appoint two new trustees to its governing board. These appointments are intended to add strength in two key areas: financial oversight, and fundraising and income generation.
About the Role
Board trustees carry shared responsibility for guiding governance, setting strategic direction, and supporting the long-term sustainability of the organisation. They bring their experience, judgement, and networks to help advance the mission and values of Amnesty International Aotearoa New Zealand.
Core Trustee Duties
- Apply their expertise to help achieve the Board’s goals.
- Contribute varied viewpoints to Board discussions and decisions.
- Link the organisation with outside perspectives and relevant networks.
- Help ensure the Board functions effectively within its governance framework and rules.
- Support the Chair, Vice Chair, and Treasurer as needed.
General Trustee Responsibilities
- Attend Board meetings and participate actively.
- Prepare in advance by reviewing papers and other material before meetings.
- Contribute to the creation and updating of Board documents.
- Engage with the wider Amnesty movement by reviewing papers, joining online discussions, and attending international meetings when needed.
- Represent Amnesty International Aotearoa New Zealand publicly when asked.
- Take part in Board subcommittees and, where appropriate, help lead them.
Human Rights and Values
Experience gained through lived realities connected to the human rights issues Amnesty International Aotearoa New Zealand addresses is welcomed. Applicants with knowledge of Te Ao Māori and Te Tiriti o Waitangi are especially encouraged to apply. A strong commitment to the organisation’s vision, mission, and values is essential, including Amnesty International’s global stance on anti-racism and feminist leadership.
Finance and Audit & Risk Focus
This trustee appointment is intended to bring strong financial governance capability and chair the Audit and Risk Committee.
- Oversee the organisation’s overall financial position so it can meet its obligations and goals.
- Help the Board understand financial risks and opportunities.
- Ensure financial records are properly maintained, and that they are reviewed or audited each year by a suitably qualified person to meet legal and accountability obligations.
- Present the audited annual financial statements at the Annual General Meeting.
Applicants should have substantial experience in one or more of these areas: financial management, accounting, auditing, or finance leadership; audit and risk governance; reading and interpreting financial statements and performance reports; and risk management frameworks and internal controls. Professional accounting or finance qualifications are helpful, though not mandatory.
Fundraising and Income Generation Focus
This trustee role is designed to strengthen capability in fundraising, donor engagement, and sustainable income generation, ideally in an NGO or charitable setting.
- Offer strategic guidance on fundraising and revenue diversification.
- Bring knowledge of donor relationships, philanthropy, grants, partnerships, or similar income-building approaches.
- Help the Board consider long-term financial sustainability.
- Where suitable, support relationship-building and networking that advances the organisation’s mission.
Applicants should have experience in one or more of the following: fundraising strategy and delivery; major donor, philanthropic, or corporate partnership development; grant funding or sponsorship; and revenue generation in NGOs, charities, social enterprises, or mission-led organisations.
Time Commitment
The commitment includes around six Board meetings each year, with a mix of online and in-person sessions. Trustees are also expected to attend a two-day strategy meeting and the Annual Meeting. Participation between meetings through online discussions, email correspondence, and Board subcommittees is also expected. For the Finance and Audit & Risk appointment, attendance at Audit and Risk Committee meetings and chairing duties will be required.
Health, Safety, and Wellbeing
All Board members are expected to help foster a strong health, safety, and wellbeing culture within the organisation.
- Take an active interest in health, safety, and wellbeing matters.
- Ask questions and challenge practices to help keep people safe and well.
- Take reasonable care for their own health, safety, and wellbeing, and avoid actions or omissions that could harm others.
- Follow reasonable health, safety, and wellbeing policies and procedures.
Special Nature of the Role
Occasional travel within Aotearoa New Zealand and overseas may be needed. These are voluntary positions, and reasonable expenses will be reimbursed.
Application Information
Interested candidates should submit a CV and a cover letter outlining why they would be a strong fit for the role. Applications close on 1 July 2026.
