Role Overview

As a Data Engineering Architect, you will concentrate on advanced engineering tasks and the development of a Modern Data Platform that supports the management of data through its lifecycle and related processes. Your work will encompass data engineering, machine learning engineering, data modernization efforts, infrastructure and platform creation, and the automation of development and delivery pipelines utilizing DevOps and CI/CD methodologies.

Key Responsibilities

  • Operate within small, collaborative teams with minimal supervision to architect and deploy cutting-edge solutions on cloud platforms including AWS, Microsoft Azure, and Google Cloud Platform, leveraging core cloud-native data warehousing tools, distributed compute engines, event streaming technologies, and modern data stack components.
  • Design and implement next-generation data platforms in partnership with innovative organizations specializing in data and analytics.
  • Analyse clients' current data environments and challenges, as well as their strategic plans for evolving or creating future data architectures.
  • Utilize your architectural expertise and consultative skills to lead collaborative design workshops involving Slalom and client technical teams, guiding the strategy and execution of data engineering solutions.
  • Clearly communicate the advantages and trade-offs of the proposed architectural approaches and foster consensus among combined teams.
  • Decompose complex development tasks, overseeing both your own work and that of your development team to ensure prompt and high-quality delivery aligned with the designed technical solutions.
  • Engage as time permits in presales activities by advising on technical strategies addressing prospective clients' challenges and assisting business development with project scoping and estimation.

Desired Qualifications and Skills

  • Extensive architecture design experience coupled with deep proficiency in one or more data engineering platforms or technologies.
  • A curious and proactive approach to client engagements, coupled with a passion for ongoing learning and experimenting boldly to solve complex data challenges.
  • Strong self-direction with an ability to break down extensive problems into manageable components and to actively share insights within projects and the wider company community.
  • Hands-on experience with technologies including but not limited to: Big Data platforms like Apache Spark, Presto, and Amazon EMR; cloud data warehouses such as Amazon Redshift, Snowflake, and Google BigQuery; object-oriented programming in Java and Python; NoSQL databases including DynamoDB, Cosmos DB, and MongoDB; container orchestration platforms like Kubernetes and Amazon ECS; streaming data solutions such as Amazon Kinesis and Apache Kafka; and modern data workflow tools including Apache Airflow, dbt, and Dagster.
