Vehicle Preparation Operative

Overview

Plymouth City Council is recruiting a dependable and enthusiastic Vehicle Preparation Operative to join the Street Scene & Waste Service team. This permanent role is based at Prince Rock Depot and involves supporting frontline waste and environmental services by preparing and maintaining vehicles, plant, equipment, and waste containers.

Key Responsibilities

• Prepare and clean vehicles, plant, and equipment prior to maintenance and MOT inspections.
• Re-clean vehicles post-maintenance for operational deployment.
• Operate vehicle wash facilities, ramps, and associated equipment safely and efficiently.
• Maintain cleanliness and operational readiness of wash bays and transfer stations.
• Perform routine upkeep and repairs to wash bay equipment as required.
• Clean waste and recycling containers, undertaking basic repairs when needed.
• Keep accurate records, both paper-based and electronic.
• Monitor inventory levels of cleaning chemicals and supplies.
• Work in compliance with Health & Safety, COSHH regulations, and safe work systems.
• Report any defects, maintenance concerns, or safety hazards to the Team Leader.
• Complete training as necessary and perform additional duties appropriate to your grade.

Working Hours and Conditions

The role entails working 37 hours per week over five days, Monday to Friday, subject to service needs. Hours may vary during Bank Holidays. Flexible working arrangements are possible depending on service requirements.

Eligibility and Application Restrictions

• Applications are restricted to current Plymouth City Council employees within Street and Waste departments, those in the Council’s formal redeployment pool, or agency workers with at least 12 weeks continuous service in an active placement.
• External candidates who do not meet these criteria will not be considered.
• Applicants must have the right to work in the UK; visa sponsorship is not available.

• The grade for this role is Grade C, with a salary range of £25,583 to £26,403.
