Position overview
School District No. 50 in Haida Gwaii is looking for a temporary custodian for Gidgalang Ḵuuyas Naay Secondary School, primarily serving the Daajing Giids–Skidegate area. The assignment begins as soon as possible and continues until the regular incumbent returns, or no later than June 30, 2027.
Compensation and schedule
The role pays $29.56 per hour, with an additional $1.00 shift premium when applicable. The work schedule is 40 hours per week.
Role summary
This position supports the cleanliness, security, and energy conservation of the assigned school building. The custodian takes direction from the Working Foreman and may also be asked to complete tasks requested by school staff.
Qualifications
- Grade 12 education is required.
- Experience or training in janitorial work is considered an advantage; a willingness to learn and maintain safe, effective cleaning practices is also acceptable.
- Knowledge of WHMIS and WorkSafeBC safety requirements is needed.
- The candidate must be able to read and understand written directions and warning labels on cleaning products, and use those products safely.
- A mechanical aptitude is needed to operate janitorial equipment correctly and maintain it properly.
- Strong tact and communication skills are required for dealing with students, staff, and members of the public.
- The job involves physical and sensory demands, including lifting, pushing, holding, reaching, bending, and carrying.
- Work is mainly indoors, though occasional outdoor work is required, and some unpleasant tasks may arise because of the nature of the job.
- The person must be able to work independently and also cooperate with coworkers when larger tasks need to be completed.
- Willingness to obtain WorkSafeBC Level I First Aid if requested is required.
