Overview

As an Ambulance Readiness Attendant (ARA) with Alberta Health Services, you play a critical role ensuring that Emergency Medical Services (EMS) vehicles and equipment are always prepared to respond to emergencies. You will meticulously check and maintain the cleanliness and functionality of ambulances, including both the passenger cab and patient compartments. Using digital checklists, you will verify equipment status, discard expired items, and restock supplies to support EMS readiness effectively.

You will also be responsible for repositioning ambulances within and around the Mega Station where you are assigned. This role is newly created and may evolve over time as the organization gains more experience in related responsibilities.

ARA positions are available in Edmonton and Calgary, offering opportunities to work in vibrant urban centers with extensive amenities and access to nature.

Role Details

As a Service Worker II, your duties include preparing and restocking patient care supplies, cleaning and disinfecting instruments and specialty equipment for immediate reuse by healthcare personnel. You will perform quality control on equipment, maintain records of servicing, and transport patients, lab specimens, blood products, and equipment as needed. Reporting safety concerns or supply issues to Unit Managers and ensuring patient care areas are well stocked are integral parts of your role.

Work Conditions

Position is based at EMS Headquarters in Calgary, with variable shifts (days, evenings, nights, weekends) spanning 12.25 hours each, 42 shifts every 12 weeks, with days off per rotation. You will be driving ambulances within or near EMS facilities, with a vehicle provided.

Required Qualifications

• Completion of Grade 12 or equivalent education level.
• Alberta Class 5 driver's license in good standing (no more than 6 demerit points, no suspensions).
• Ability to complete vehicle orientation and maneuvering competency assessments prior to driving EMS vehicles.
• Basic knowledge of cleaning, disinfection, and inventory management processes.
• Basic understanding of automotive components, operations, and maintenance inspections.
• Proficiency in basic computer use, including electronic checklists and form completion.
• Fluency in English sufficient to read, write, speak, and follow written and oral instructions.
• Capability to work independently with minimal supervision.
• Physical ability to lift up to 80 pounds, climb into ambulances, stand and walk for extended periods, and bend, crouch, and twist freely.

Preferred Qualifications

• Experience in cleaning duties within hospital or institutional environments.
• Knowledge of machinery and tools including their maintenance and troubleshooting.
• Experience in vehicle detailing and driving larger vehicles such as full-size pickup trucks or cube vans.
• Relevant education, training, or customer service experience may count towards suitability.
