ജോലി വിവരണം
About Nabu Casa
Nabu Casa is the company behind Home Assistant, the world’s largest free and open-source smart home platform, serving more than two million households. The business was created to keep the project sustainable, and in 2024 it joined with the Open Home Foundation to help protect and grow open-source initiatives. Privacy, choice, and sustainability are central to how the company builds products and works with its community.
The company is profitable and has no outside investors. Its revenue comes directly from Home Assistant Cloud subscribers and customers who buy Home Assistant hardware, so the company’s focus stays on employees and users. Nabu Casa also supports open-source work in hardware, standards, and voice technology.
About the Role
This position is for a senior Python integration engineer focused on hardware. You will own the Python software layer that connects Nabu Casa’s hardware products with the Home Assistant ecosystem. The work sits at the intersection of hardware and software, creating integrations and device-support code that make physical devices work smoothly inside Home Assistant.
You will partner closely with the Hardware team and the Embedded Linux Developer. Your code will shape the experience users get as soon as they connect a Nabu Casa device. The role is centered on client-side integration and application-layer work rather than firmware, operating system, or low-level hardware development.
The role also covers software and application logic for Nabu Casa products and services across Home Assistant, ESPHome, and the wider Open Home ecosystem. You should be comfortable working in large, changing codebases with many dependencies, contributors, and long-term maintenance needs.
Core Responsibilities
- Take ownership of integrations and software support for Nabu Casa products across Home Assistant, ESPHome, and related Open Home projects throughout the product lifecycle.
- Develop and maintain Python integrations, proxy libraries, and related software that connect Nabu Casa hardware with the Home Assistant and ESPHome ecosystems.
- Create Python code that communicates with device protocols and hardware peripherals, converting low-level behavior into clear Home Assistant entities and polished user experiences.
- Work with the Embedded Linux OS Engineer and Hardware team to understand device capabilities and turn them into reliable software integrations.
- Contribute where needed to Home Assistant core, ESPHome, and adjacent projects to support integrations, config flows, entity models, and platform features.
- Keep code quality high by producing well-tested, maintainable, and well-documented Python.
- Review community pull requests and issue reports related to the integrations you own, offering helpful and constructive guidance.
- Diagnose and fix integration problems such as protocol edge cases, compatibility issues, regressions, and device communication failures.
- Maintain strong unit, integration, and hardware-in-the-loop test coverage where applicable.
Requirements
- Solid Python engineering experience, including async/await, testing tools, type annotations, and scalable architecture patterns.
- Proven involvement in large open-source projects, with public pull requests, code review, and asynchronous collaboration experience.
- Background building integrations, APIs, automation systems, device-communication layers, or software for connected devices.
- Comfort working across software and hardware boundaries, including an understanding of device protocols and hardware interaction concepts.
- Exposure to local communication protocols such as Bluetooth, Zigbee, USB, UART, mDNS, SPI, I2C, MQTT, or similar technologies.
- Ability to learn unfamiliar systems quickly, work through large codebases, and uncover how complex systems fit together.
- Strong debugging and troubleshooting skills for integrations and distributed systems.
- Familiarity with Home Assistant, ESPHome, integrations, config flows, entity models, or other Open Home ecosystem projects is a plus.
- High ownership and autonomy, with the ability to drive integrations independently from idea to long-term maintenance.
- Comfort collaborating across distributed teams, cultures, and time zones in a highly asynchronous setting.
- Receptive to feedback and willing to adapt based on review comments.
- Community-minded approach, with comfort contributing publicly and working with external contributors in open-source environments.
- Strong written communication and the ability to explain technical ideas clearly.
- Quality-focused while still being practical and delivery-oriented.
Nice-to-Have Experience
- Prior contributions to Home Assistant, ESPHome, or related Open Home Foundation projects.
- Experience building software for smart home, IoT, or connected hardware products.
- Familiarity with Raspberry Pi or embedded Linux environments.
- Experience supporting software that runs at scale across distributed hardware setups.
- Experience in fully remote, async-first engineering teams.
Working Model
This is a fully remote role. Nabu Casa uses Remote to employ people around the world, and you will be hired as a salaried employee in your country.
The position is full time at 40 hours per week. There is no fixed daily schedule, but the team aims for at least 3 hours of overlap during the workday to support communication. You will report to the Engineering Manager.
Benefits and Perks
- Five weeks, or 25 days, of paid time off.
- Fourteen days of paid sick leave if sickness leave is unpaid under local law.
- Six weeks of paid parental leave plus six weeks of unpaid parental leave, available in the first year after birth.
- Work hardware budget provided at the start, with the option to keep the equipment for personal use after three years.
- Annual smart home budget.
- Annual education budget.
- Yearly performance bonus tied to company performance.
- 50% contribution toward home internet costs.
- One day every two weeks reserved for personal projects.
- Time allowed during work hours to maintain Home Assistant-related side projects you are already working on.
Compensation
The company aims to offer total compensation around the 75th percentile for the role, seniority, and local market. Approximate annual compensation is listed as follows: Canada: 105,000 to 129,100 CAD; US: 120,000 to 155,000 USD; LatAm: 50,000 to 65,000 USD. For other countries, compensation is discussed during the first interview. Final figures may vary based on experience, qualifications, and working hours.
Supportive Context

It is best known for driving Home Assistant’s development and supports open hardware tools such as ESPHome and ESP Web Tools; open standards such as Python Matter Server, Z-Wave JS, ZigPy, BTHome, and Improv Wi-Fi; open voice projects such as Rhasspy, Wyoming Protocol, and Piper; and Music Assistant.
