Job description

Position Summary

The Project Engineer role requires overseeing both administrative and technical components of construction projects while managing a team of field and cost engineers. This position functions as the primary link between the construction manager and the team concerning cost, revenue, and cash flow data. Additionally, the role includes leading and mentoring junior engineers to support their professional growth.

District and Work Environment

Operating within the Eastern Canada District, the projects span highways, bridges, mass transit systems, mining developments including open pit operations, hydroelectric powerhouses, wind energy facilities, dams, and industrial sites. The company relocates teams as project demands evolve to match career growth and operational needs.

Key Responsibilities

  • Gain comprehensive knowledge of contract documents including plans and specifications;
  • Inspect project sites to identify issues, cost-saving opportunities, and verify compliance, taking corrective measures when necessary;
  • Review and supervise subordinates' work ensuring adherence to contract standards, addressing any shortcomings;
  • Evaluate and apply safe and effective work practices guided by supervisors' directions;
  • Assess installed equipment functionality to identify hazards and recommend necessary adjustments or replacements;
  • Recognize workplace hazards, implementing appropriate corrective actions to mitigate risks;
  • Respond correctly to safety alerts and warning devices on site;
  • Apply lockout/tagout procedures safely and effectively;
  • Create and update comprehensive project master schedules utilizing relevant software with input from management team members;
  • Manage document control processes, including logging and distributing contract documents and drawings;
  • Analyze new drawings and contract changes to quantify impacts and communicate with supervisors and field teams;
  • Develop monthly cost projections and quarterly cash flow forecasts using project management data;
  • Coordinate procurement and expedite material deliveries, overseeing material control operations;
  • Support the site manager in enforcing quality assurance and control practices;
  • Propose improvements to project operations including staffing and procedural enhancements;
  • Serve as lead project engineer or coordinator across multiple projects, providing supervision and hands-on training to junior engineers;
  • Demonstrate proficient communication skills and mathematical abilities;
  • Interpret construction drawings and visualize plans in three dimensions.

Qualifications and Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree in construction-related disciplines or equivalent education and experience;
  • Licensed Professional Engineer (P.Eng.) or registered as Engineer-in-Training or eligible for registration;
  • At least five years of construction experience with a safety focus;
  • Knowledgeable in managing accounting systems (accounts payable/receivable), material control, estimating, job cost tracking, and subcontract administration;
  • Proven leadership, communication, planning, organizational, delegation, and mentoring capabilities;
  • Availability to relocate and travel as project requirements dictate;
  • Capability to set high standards in leadership, safety, quality, and productivity;
  • Physical ability to access all construction site areas.

Compensation and Benefits

Base salary ranges from $97,142 to $130,000 annually, with actual salary depending on education, experience, skills, and location.
