About Kinship
Kinship creates software tailored for architects and engineering teams to handle their complex workflows, extensive content libraries, and detailed data efficiently. Their tools aim to transform complexity into seamless, fast, and enjoyable user experiences, overcoming the clunky solutions currently available.
Role Overview
We seek a product designer specialized in UI/UX who excels at simplifying intricate workflows into clear, intuitive, and engaging interfaces. This role requires a deep understanding of user workflows and meticulous documentation to ensure practical solutions, not merely aesthetic designs. Architecture or engineering domain knowledge is not required initially as training will be provided. The position involves working collaboratively within an expanding design team already led by an experienced designer, focusing heavily on Figma and crafting comprehensive design systems.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead feature design from problem framing and flow creation through to pixel-perfect, developer-ready interfaces.
- Convert dense, data-driven processes into user-friendly, efficient workflows.
- Develop and maintain a design system in Figma inclusive of components, variants, tokens, and consistent patterns as the product scales.
- Create thorough documentation outlining all states, edge conditions, and interactions to streamline engineering implementation.
- Prototype interactive elements to test motion and behavior before development.
- Collaborate closely with engineers and contribute to growing the design team and culture at Kinship.
Required Qualifications
- A minimum of five years’ experience designing software products involving structured data and dynamic interactions, backed by a portfolio showcasing delivered projects, systems thinking, and precise attention to detail.
- Expertise in Figma, including its use for both visual design and detailed documentation—components, variants, auto-layout, variables/tokens, named states, and robust handoff procedures. Knowledge of Sketch is an acceptable alternative.
- Experience presenting Figma files that demonstrate detailed documentation and efficient handoff, not just polished final screens.
- Keen attention to critical UI details such as typography, spacing, hierarchy, and handling non-ideal states like loading or errors.
- Proven track record working closely with engineers within product teams, facilitating clear communication and iterative refinement.
Preferred Additional Skills
- Familiarity with Framer or equivalent tools for creating detailed interaction prototypes to illustrate motion (not for developer handoff).
- Basic understanding of HTML and CSS to comprehend how designs translate into functioning interfaces, with the ability to tweak browser elements when beneficial.
- Experience designing, building, or managing a design system.
Design Philosophy
Design is considered complete only when an engineer can execute the implementation precisely without assumptions—covering every state and breakpoint. Figma is the principal platform for design and documentation, supplemented by prototyping tools when necessary for exploring animation and interaction behavior. Clear, detailed documentation is prioritized to enhance the product’s build quality and speed.
Candidate Profile
- Enjoys converting complex and cluttered information into streamlined, evident interfaces.
- Focuses intensely on nuances such as UI states, spacing, and exceptions because these influence product experience.
- Values involvement in core product decisions and iterative development cycles.
- Thrives in a small, motivated, collaborative team environment with fast and frequent releases.
- Champion simplicity and clarity over flashiness.
- Practices meticulous craftsmanship especially during handoffs to engineers.
What We Provide
- Competitive remuneration.
- A vibrant, plant-filled office situated conveniently near Southwark tube station in central London, with quality coffee.
- An office-first work model with flexible trust-based arrangements.
- A culture that promotes a healthy work-life balance; working hard but ensuring timely departures.
- A straightforward and genuine team passionate about building exceptional software with autonomy and influence over product direction and company culture.
