Job description
Position Overview
The Pharmacy Assistant plays a supportive role to the Pharmacist by aiding in prescription processing and handling administrative tasks, thereby enabling the Pharmacist to concentrate on patient care activities. This role requires active participation in all facets of pharmacy operations as a collaborative team member, and is integral to delivering excellent customer service.
Key Responsibilities
- Receiving and reviewing prescriptions from patients while adhering to provincial legal and regulatory standards, ensuring all necessary details such as patient information and prescription specifics are complete and accurate.
- Performing computer-based tasks under the Pharmacist's guidance, including data entry, price verification, patient information updates, interpretation of prescription details (including Latin abbreviations and drug names), dosage calculations, managing refills, report creation, and patient profile evaluations.
- Filling prescriptions under supervision by selecting correct products, executing accuracy checks (such as 7-point, visual, and DIN verifications), measuring and labeling items, organizing them for pharmacist verification, obtaining approvals for verbal refills when authorized, and assisting with cognitive service facilitation.
- Assisting in inventory management by maintaining appropriate drug and supply levels, identifying and removing expired medicines monthly, clearing out stale prescriptions from the will-call bin regularly, processing returns and orders, using designated wholesalers, managing incoming stock with tools like the Telxon gun, and maintaining shelf organization and drug brand knowledge.
- Maintaining cleanliness and organization within the dispensary, stocking prescription supplies, ensuring a safe and sanitary work environment, and caring for dispensing equipment and office devices like computers and fax machines.
- Organizing clerical materials, including filing prescriptions, invoices, reports, correspondence, and providing administrative assistance such as managing journals and accounts receivable records.
- Supporting over-the-counter (OTC) operations through tasks such as ordering, stocking, and cashier duties as delegated by OTC management or the Pharmacist.
Compensation
The hourly wage for this position ranges from $20.15 to $26.42, with the exact remuneration determined by experience.
