Role Overview

The position is a front-line trading role within Luno’s South African OTC desk, reporting to the Head of Trading. The trader will price, execute, and manage risks for significant institutional, corporate, and professional trader transactions in a highly active crypto-fiat marketplace. Working with the Treasury team, OTC colleagues, local teams, and relationship managers, the goal is to maintain a profitable trading book, expand market coverage, and grow into senior leadership as the desk scales.

Key Responsibilities

• Manage and grow the client book by being the primary contact for institutional and VIP clients, pricing and quoting large OTC trades and ensuring consistent repeat business.
• Collaborate with local teams and relationship managers to build sustainable client relationships.
• Oversee working capital allocation, ensuring trades are pre-funded or sufficiently credit-backed.
• Handle trade disputes comprehensively and coordinate with Trade Operations for clean settlements.
• Execute OTC trades, counter-trades, and market hedging according to strategy and risk limits.
• Mitigate market risks related to working capital and revenue streams by hedging and performing liquidity trades.
• Monitor and defend the desk’s P&L against set targets and risk parameters.
• Contribute to strategy development spanning crypto and FX trading, including hedging, revenue liquidation, derivatives, arbitrage, and warehousing, focusing on risk and profitability.
• Analyze digital asset markets continuously, tracking trends, regulations, news, and flows affecting prices.
• Deliver regular market summaries to Treasury and inform company-wide decisions with insights.
• Maintain detailed trade, P&L, risk, and performance records for audit and reporting.
• Produce thorough stakeholder reports on trading activities, results, and market perspectives.
• Influence the enhancement of trading and risk management systems, promoting automation and systematic execution.
• Assess and challenge risk frameworks and models as markets evolve.

Candidate Profile

• 3 to 5 years of trading experience on brokerage or sell-side OTC desks, ideally in crypto, FX, equities, or derivatives.
• A bachelor’s degree in Finance, Economics, Mathematics, Business Administration, Accounting, or related fields.
• Experience or knowledge in derivatives arbitrage is advantageous.
• Possession of advanced qualifications such as CFA, CAIA, or MBA is a plus.
• Proven trading success across multiple markets.
• Ambitious to develop into broader market roles and eventual trading leadership.
• Capable of thriving in a fast-paced, dynamic trading environment.
• Strict adherence to regulatory compliance and ethical trading practice.
• Detail-oriented with high accuracy in trade execution and documentation.
• Excellent communication skills, teamwork, and a transparent, driven demeanor.
