About the Role
Noratel Canada is seeking a hands-on Mechanical Engineer based in Mississauga, Ontario, to lead mechanical design and development efforts for transformer and reactor product lines serving manufacturing operations across Canada, the US, and Mexico. This role requires ownership of the mechanical design lifecycle, covering everything from customer requirements assessment and CAD modeling to simulation, BOM creation, procurement, and final production release. The position blends technical design duties with close collaboration among manufacturing teams, suppliers, and international colleagues to ensure products meet manufacturability, cost, and quality standards backed by thorough technical documentation.
Key Responsibilities
- Design and update mechanical parts and assemblies using 3D CAD software such as Autodesk Inventor or similar platforms.
- Develop precise 2D manufacturing drawings for parts and assemblies.
- Conduct finite element method (FEM), thermal, and structural simulations to validate design integrity.
- Analyze customer specifications and technical requirements to determine design feasibility.
- Create practical, cost-efficient, and manufacturable designs.
- Prepare and maintain technical documentation including equipment manuals, repair guides, manufacturing and testing procedures, and reports.
- Manage engineering change processes by creating, reviewing, approving, and implementing modifications.
- Keep drawings, specifications, and design records current and aligned with quality and regulatory standards.
- Develop and maintain bills of materials (BOM) and manufacturing routing data in ERP systems such as Sage500, ensuring consistency and accuracy.
- Source components and raw materials for product development, cost-reduction, and compliance projects.
- Solicit and assess quotations from vendors and fabricators while collaborating to optimize design for cost, quality, availability, and manufacturability.
- Provide ongoing technical support to production teams and partner plants throughout North America, assisting with troubleshooting, design clarifications, and resolving manufacturing issues.
- Drive continuous improvements in design, documentation, sourcing, and production processes through cross-functional collaboration with engineering, operations, quality, and supply chain departments.
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering or a related field.
- At least three years of experience in mechanical design within a manufacturing environment.
- Proficient in 3D CAD modeling and 2D technical drafting; familiarity with Autodesk Inventor preferred.
- Experience using FEM, structural, or thermal simulation techniques.
- Knowledge of design for manufacturing and assembly principles.
- Skilled in creating and maintaining BOMs and routing within ERP software.
- Understanding of international safety and product standards such as IEC, UL, and CSA.
- Strong technical writing and documentation capabilities.
- Ability to juggle multiple projects and meet deadlines.
- Effective communication skills with ability to collaborate across cultures and functions.
- Spanish language skills are advantageous.
Competencies
- Applied, solution-focused engineering mindset.
- Excellent detail orientation and documentation discipline.
- Manufacturing-centric approach emphasizing practical design implementation.
- Strong analytical and structured problem-solving skills.
- Ability to perform well under pressure.
- Collaborative, accountable, and proactive work ethic.
What Noratel Offers
- Permanent full-time employment.
- Engagement in broad technical ownership and hands-on engineering tasks.
- Exposure to manufacturing environments across North America.
- Opportunities to work on tailored transformer and reactor solutions.
- Collaboration with international teams in engineering, production, and supply chain.
- Professional growth prospects within Noratel and discoverIE Group.
- Periodic travel to Canada, the US, and Mexico as required.
