Job Overview

The Nunatsiavut Government seeks a dedicated Maintenance Worker based in Happy Valley–Goose Bay, Newfoundland and Labrador. This permanent full-time position involves performing routine maintenance and minor repairs across various government buildings and properties, ensuring a safe, clean, and well-maintained environment.

Key Duties and Responsibilities

  • Carry out light maintenance and minor repairs including painting and basic carpentry work on buildings, equipment, and machinery.
  • Conduct thorough routine inspections inside and outside buildings, reporting any issues in writing with photographs to the Maintenance Coordinator; inspections cover areas such as lighting systems, roofing, siding, windows, washrooms, fire safety equipment, security systems, smoke alarms, HVAC units, fans, and heaters.
  • Manage security by opening office buildings and performing safety checks inside and outside to safeguard properties, including locations like 460 Hamilton River Road and 39 Tenth Street.
  • Identify and resolve common problems such as clogged toilets, leaking faucets, broken doors, and replace bulbs or other minor maintenance tasks.
  • Ensure fire safety equipment is maintained and current.
  • Maintain building exteriors by tidying grounds to create safe and welcoming surroundings.
  • Assist with snow removal and ice control in winter and support lawn mowing and grounds upkeep during summer.
  • Help the maintenance team by procuring supplies and coordinating their delivery and transport to various locations, including docks and cargo shipments.
  • Assist with transporting vehicles to local garages for servicing and shuttle deliveries to docks as needed.
  • Support major maintenance projects by collaborating with the Facilities Management and liaising with contractors for emergency or specialized repairs outside normal operating hours.
  • Respond promptly to emergencies such as power outages or damages that threaten equipment or building integrity.
  • Ensure security by monitoring building access points and checking that doorways, windows, and vents are clear of snow and ice and all buildings are locked when not in use.
  • Manage parking lot maintenance and organization for office building users.
  • Develop preventative maintenance schedules and maintain detailed logs and records of maintenance activities.
  • Complete assigned work orders, update their status, and communicate with vendors or landlords for leased properties, using the computerized maintenance management system (Click Maintenance).
  • Operate all equipment safely and efficiently, adhering to relevant legislation and internal guidelines, including regular inspections of government-owned vehicles.
  • Submit regular reports on safety, maintenance, and seasonal odometer readings to the Maintenance Coordinator.
  • Maintain organization and inventory control of supplies and storage areas, ensuring safety and accessibility.
  • Wear appropriate personal protective equipment and follow all workplace safety standards, reporting incidents and near misses to promote a culture of safety.
  • Travel to other Nunatsiavut communities as necessary to provide maintenance support.
  • Perform additional related duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications

  • Valid Class 5 Driver's License.
  • 3 to 5 years of relevant experience in maintenance.
  • Basic proficiency with computers.
  • Good communication skills, both written and oral.
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Trade certifications in relevant skilled areas.
  • Knowledge of electrical, mechanical, plumbing, carpentry, and heating systems.
  • Familiarity with work order management systems.
  • Fluency in both Inuktitut and English is an asset.
